Hantavirus in the News? No Need to Panic in Northern VA
Hey neighbors in Ashburn, Aldie, Leesburg, Fairfax, and surrounding areas, we’ve seen the headlines and know some of you have questions.
Key facts to keep in mind:
Hantavirus (HPS) is extremely rare in Virginia, with only a handful of cases ever reported statewide. The vast majority of U.S. cases occur out West.
The virus is primarily carried by deer mice and white-footed mice (wild mice that prefer outdoors and wooded areas), not the common house mice we typically deal with in homes here in northern Virginia.
A solid pest control program including sealing entry points, proper sanitation, and safe cleanup, is exactly what keeps any rodent risk (including this one) extremely low. The virus is typically contracted by breathing in dust from urine-soaked areas or handling rodent droppings. Good ventilation and wetting down droppings before cleaning is always smart, along with standard precautions like wearing gloves and a dust mask.
