Lizzie stepped into the aisle where I was looking for a library book. With a shine in her eyes and a sparkle in her voice, she asks, "Are you a Mom?" We talk about my step-children, her school and friends, and her favorite book. A light-bulb expression appears on her face as she says, "Have you ever reading the BAD Kitty books?" Nope! She takes me to the shelf, pulls off 3 Bad Kitty options. I ask for her favorite. No hesitation. This is the one.
What a delightful interaction. I felt admiration that a 9 year old girl has no hesitation in using her voice. Zero. I felt proud of her.
After checking out my book and Lizzie's recommended book, I met her mom and said, "writer, actor, saleswoman, leader!" She agreed.

I always thought, "I'm not smart." Brother-sister- A+ students. Me. B-C+. Until this solution:

I am writing my Master Degree dissertation. I struggled processing information. So....I sat on the floor, colored sharpies in hand, and transposed my research onto multiple flip chart papers. I hung Arts in Education information like wallpaper on my walls.

Today, I'm designing a new workshop. She Has A Voice: Speaking Skills to Empower Women and I'm using the same method.

It's visual - processing easier. It's Kinesthetic - I'm engaged. It's brainstorming - no filter. It's birds-eye view and detail all in one place.

Sometimes, things happen. I stepped up to the mic and Murphy's Law threw me a fast one. The microphone malfunctioned and a glass shattered right beside me.

And then, my speech derailed.

My brain emptied.
Discombobulation personified.
Three seconds? Three hours? I still don't know.

I'm a professional speaking coach, and not a single word was readily available. I vividly remember the loud silence.

Could my mortifying, sudden mummification have been avoided?
