Field work is an important component of understanding landslides and creating landslide maps. Delve into this blog to see landslide features in the lidar change detection maps AND what they look like in the field. We use this information to refine models that help us better educate people about landslide hazards near homes and infrastructure.

Estimating where landslide debris is going to come to rest is an important part of hazard delineation. LiDAR change detection imagery has made evaluating landslide runouts much easier, with color-c…

Being aware of the weather forecast is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself and your family from landslides. This Hurricane Preparedness Week, take the opportunity to learn if you are in an area susceptible to landslides. See if there are landslide susceptible areas upslope of or along the roads you would need to use to evacuate. If so, plan to leave the area prior to the storm, or have your home stocked to take care of yourself for several days to weeks, depending on your location.

Prepare for hurricane season by knowing how to understand forecasts. They can tell you a lot about what is expected, including the storm’s paths, rainfall amounts, wind speeds, and more. There is a lot of information available days ahead of a storm, and it is important to understand what it means.

The NOVA team and Windfall Films did a great job with this documentary on recent flooding events, including Helene. It was good getting to work with them to show them the landslide component of flooding in the mountains. ALC's Jennifer Bauer and Philip Prince are interviewed for the film and Stephen Fuemmeler and Robert McSweeney are given Special Thanks for assisting with drone videos.

It aired tonight, and is streaming online.

Find out why deadly flash floods are on the rise and how we can protect ourselves from them.
