Rare. Important. Utterly unforgettable.

Forget statement jewelry, this is headline jewelry. This collection comes to Brunk Auctions from the estate of Tessa Ader, the English-born Charlottesville, Virginia, philanthropist who in 2021 donated $50 million to the University of Virginia to fund the building of a performing arts center. Tessa was, in her own right, a highly regarded enamelist and jewelry designer whose work was exhibited at juried Guild shows in Florida and Japan. Notably, several pieces in this collection retain their original custom gilt-embossed leather and velvet-lined cases.

Historic Deerfield, Deerfield, Massachusetts, deaccessioned this Aesthetic Movement inlaid and parcel gilt ebonized bed at a Sotheby's sale in January 2007. John B. Schorsch, New York City, gifted it to the Brooklyn Museum in 2009. The wood is possibly cherry, and the manufacturer is possibly Herter Brothers, New York City, circa 1880. The 75" x 62ÂĽ" x 84" bed sold on LiveAuctioneers for $9100 (est. $1000/1500) at Brunk Auctions

The Brunk catalog suggests the Springfield, Massachusetts, area as the origin for this mid- 18th-century figured mahogany high chest with carved fans. The catalog also mentions the likelihood that the handsome skirt drops and urn and flame finials have been restored. The Brooklyn Museum purchased the 85 1/16" x 43Âľ" x 21Âľ" chest from Miss C.B. Woodman of Philadelphia or Springfield, in 1916. It sold on for $27,500 (est. $10,000/15,000) at Brunk Auctions
