This week we're highlighting the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP), a federal law-enforcement agency with a mission that extends far beyond the grounds of the U.S. Capitol.

Founded in 1828, USCP is responsible for protecting Members of Congress, staff, visitors, facilities and the legislative process itself. Today the department operates as a highly specialized law-enforcement agency with capabilities spanning protection, intelligence, investigations, security and emergency response.

The department is organized into several key bureaus:

Uniformed Services: Provides day-to-day police and security operations throughout the Capitol Complex.

Operations Services: Provides specialized response capabilities, including tactical, hazardous incident and emergency response.

Protective Services: Responsible for dignitary protection and criminal investigations.

Intelligence Services: Identifies, analyzes, and helps mitigate threats to Congress and the Capitol Complex.

Security Services: Oversees physical security, coordination and technical countermeasures.

Together, these capabilities allow USCP to protect the Capitol, Congress and the legislative process against a wide range of threats.
