☀️What a beautiful day! 90 degrees, sunshine... What motivates you to work on your business on days like this?

-Courses?
-Templates?
-Books?
-Fast-approaching deadlines?

All of these are fine, but what motivates me most is other humans keeping me accountable. Checking in on me - not in a "You better get this done, or else!" way, but in a "Hey, how's that project coming along?" way. People that genuinely care and want to see me win! And the feeling is 100% mutual.

I am gathering these humans together this summer to keep me, and YOU, accountable and forward-moving all summer long.

When you get in a room with other entrepreneurs, something happens. New thoughts arise. Ideas start to flow. You realize that you are not, in fact, crazy. You are able to offer tips and suggestions to others, and they to you.

The Hub, North: Small Business Summer Series is just that. Sure, we'll have tactical things to work on, but you will be supported by a group of local business owners whose relationships will last long after summer time ends.

🚀As small business owners, we tend to have 17 new ideas a day. Some big, some small, some just plain weird.

We dive in head first, all excited and pumped up about this new product/ service/ event/ offering but then we realize there's more to getting something out there than "the thing". There's pricing, timelines, marketing, licensing, additional education we may need, and more! And all of the sudden, we're overwhelmed. 😵‍💫

Sometimes we give up all together on the idea, or sometimes it sits stagnant as just another open tab on the desktop. No? Just me? I didn't think so.

What we need is a plan. A place to start and a clear place to finish, and that finish line is called "Launch".

I've created a process called NORTHBOUND: From Idea to Launch. A 7-step framework to take any big idea from brainstorm to launch. You guys? It WORKS. I've used it for years in my businesses (although I didn't have a name on it), taught it with other entrepreneurs and observed it happening organically with other businesses.

I've got to confess something... I do not love social media 😭.

There, I've said it. It's probably quite obvious as I do not have 1 million followers, witty hooks or videos that focus on "the first 3 second rule". That's not to say I don't know about those things and understand them, I just simply don't do much on social in my personal life and that makes it tricky for me in my businesses.

But social media isn't the ONLY way to brand yourself. Visibility comes in all shapes and sizes. When I meet with entrepreneurs, they often confide in me: "I just don't know what to post". And my response is: "Me neither, but we don't have to if we don't want to!"

When you come to The Hub, North: Small Business Summer Series, Session 2, we'll get in the weeds about branding and visibility. We'll talk about which social platforms are right for YOUR business and which ones you can skip, as well as strategies for visibility that don't include posting, if you're not into it. We'll get into some AI tools that can help, learn an intro to CapCut (if you do love making videos) and the best part: We'll be at Brant's Apple Orchard! We will ALL be creating content that day!

Sure, some people love posting on social media. They post daily, sometimes multiple times per day - and that's AWESOME! But if that's not you, rest easy. There are other ways to get in front of your ideal customer and we'll cover it all at Small Business Summer Series!

"I wish someone would just SAY: You don't have to have it all figured out to grow a small business!"

This morning, I attended the Youth LEADERship Project Fair and Ceremony (now THOSE are some future leaders in the community!!). While I was wandering around, I spoke to a woman who confided in me that she wanted to start a small business!

After talking for a few minutes, it was clear to me that she already HAS a small business, she just doesn't call it that. Maybe it doesn't feel "real".

I was suggesting that maybe not all of the things need to be in place before she considers it "real". She said "I wish someone would just say that! I wish someone would say that you don't have to have it all figured out to grow a business!". 🤯

Well if you're waiting for it, here's me telling you: You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to wait until XYZ happens. If you sell products or services and are working toward that, you have a small business my friend 🙌🏻 You don't have to have it all figured out.

I met with 2 Ashtabula County small business owners today. They have very different businesses and we had very different conversations. Over the course of two conversations, we covered everything from finances to leadership to AI implementation to courage and confidence...

And it wasn't just the other person talking. These meetings help me as much as they help them. The key is: we can help EACH OTHER.

What I love is meeting the entrepreneur exactly where they are and hashing it out together. That IS The Hub, North. I don't pretend to know a lot about anything, but two heads are better than one and we can brainstorm and come up with solutions to fit the current need.

I have this experience over and over and it is extremely beneficial to myself and my businesses. I want you to have this epiphany!

⭐️Happy National Small Business Week!

You know what I love about small businesses? That every single one is completely different. Sure, they might sell the same products, perform the same services, but they do it in their OWN way. They use their own voice, their own ideas and gain their own loyal following (even if it's a following of 1).

You know what I also love about small businesses? That we're all the same. If we don't know something, we figure it out. We learn. We're scrappy. We get better. We ask questions that make no sense to family and friends, but when we get in a room together, there are nods of understanding all around.

If you are a small business owner - keep going 🙌🏻 It's hard as hell sometimes, but there are people that have your back!

Woodsong Acres is not only a beautiful B&B in Ashtabula County (you should absolutely book a night or two soon!) they produce maple syrup AND will be opening their Cider House coming up!

Esther and Jay are the epitome of entrepreneurship. They see a challenge, and make it into something real and valuable for the community. And just look at these two entrepreneurs they're raising!

I used to have a fear of "business people".

I had a terrible experience at my very first networking event back in 2017. Our retail store was brand new and I thought "Oh! I should go to a local event!". I felt out of place, under qualified and downright stupid. I came home and told my husband "I will never be doing THAT again!". And I didn't. For years.

If I had a question, I couldn't bear to ask anyone that could actually help me. Shouldn't I KNOW how to do this? I own the business after all! I felt dumb asking people who had been in business and had been there before, but frankly, I didn't know what the hell I was doing.

So I did what most entrepreneurs do: I googled. I took one-off courses. I used pre-fab Pinterest templates and read about a million blog posts and articles that were for a one-size-fits-all audience.

Then, one day I realized that I was spending a LOT of time in the retail store, pulled aside at the counter talking with other local business owners. Not the snoody-corporate ones that I'd met back in 2017. These people knew what it was like to live in the day to day fire. They would give nods of understanding when I mentioned a struggle, and I was actually able to interject words of encouragement and knowledge that helped them as well!

That's when I realized it: Community is the missing cornerstone to Small Business Success.

Talking to just one other business owner can save you months of research, save money and give you the confidence in knowing you're not crazy. Someone has been there before, and they generally want to help you. And you may offer that same help to them.

The Hub, North: Small Business Summer Series is small business community in action. We'll not only go over strategies and tactical implementation, we'll be doing it ALONGSIDE other business owners. Having the discussions, exchanging the ideas, offering support.
