My deepest gratitude to the KEMSA Billing Society who invited me to do a workshop at this year’s Kansas EMS Association conference. The attendees were engaged, asked great questions and found opportunities to network and help each other. KEMSA demonstrated the kind of value a state association offers the EMS providers in their state!

Elevance (formerly known as Anthem Blue Cross) will roll Amerigroup into Wellpoint in the new year. This was already done in Maryland. In 2024, Amerigroup will be Wellpoint in Arizona, Iowa, New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. In you do ambulance or NEMT billing in those states, stay tuned to this change so you do not face a disruption in claims processing.

MEDICAID ALERT for all providers who bill Medicaid or Medicaid managed care for ambulance or NEMT services - in past 2 weeks I've seen THREE major Medicaid fraud efforts. There was one arrest (Florida Medicaid Fraud Control Unit arrested a SNF office manager). The OIG announced their plan to monitor "State Medicaid Agencies' Perspectives of Managed Care Plans' Referral of Fraud." Plus, the US Attorney's Office of the Western District of VA fined HCA $4.6 million for improper billing.

Medicaid compliance is critical! Monitor Medicaid AND Medicaid managed care billings. Conduct an internal audit. Consider an external review. Neglecting Medicaid compliance could lead to costly, time-consuming consequences.
