Just two weeks until our August training sessions at the I&I Sling Greensboro, North Carolina branch. Hosted by RiggSafe Solutions, Inc., these hands-on courses are designed to strengthen rigging knowledge and reinforce safe, compliant lifting practices.

On August 19, 2026, the Competent Rigger 1 course provides an 8-hour introduction to fundamental and intermediate rigging principles. Participants will cover rigging calculations for symmetrical loads, understanding and controlling a load's center of gravity (CG), inspection procedures for common slings and rigging hardware, and communication requirements for mobile, tower, and overhead cranes. Through practical, hands-on instruction, attendees will build confidence while developing the skills needed to expand their rigging knowledge.

Continuing to use damaged lifting equipment puts your crew, your load, and your operation at unnecessary risk. Knowing when to retire a sling is just as important as knowing how to use it. Keep these removal-from-service reminders in mind:

Roundslings: Remove from service if you find cut or torn covers, exposed core yarns, melted or heat-damaged fibers, chemical damage, missing identification tags, or any condition that could reduce the sling's strength.

Wire Rope Slings: Remove from service if you discover bent, kinked, crushed, or birdcaged rope, severe corrosion, damaged end fittings, or any deformation that compromises the sling's integrity.

General Rule: If there is any doubt about the condition of a sling, remove it from service immediately and have it inspected or replaced. A damaged sling should never be returned to service until it has been properly evaluated.

Taking questionable equipment out of service before it fails is one of the simplest ways to prevent serious incidents. A few moments of inspection can protect your crew and your equipment.

In recognition of Construction Safety Week, we started off the week with a one-hour Toolbox Talk with The Lane Construction Corporation in Woodbridge, Virginia, where crews are actively working on a major road and intersection expansion project featuring multiple overpasses.

The team took time to talk through the day’s tasks, identify hazards, reinforce safe practices, and make sure everyone was aligned before work began. These conversations help set the tone for a safer, more productive day as work continues on this complex infrastructure project.
