Don’t be afraid to speak the proven truth! Cutting down hardwoods even in some cases white and red oaks to plant evergreen trees along with soft mast bearing trees to break up the landscape in large, predominantly climax oak/hickory forests can be really beneficial for game and non-game wildlife. It can change whitetail travel patterns, decrease pressure from hunter activity, increase beneficial forest floor habitat, and create excellent stand locations all of which can and will increase daytime encounters with mature whitetail bucks. Parts of states where I’ve done this successfully for clients include TN, KY and MS.

The HuntPro mobile app offers a real-time, geo located, easy to use observation data log. If you see it then just go to the app, tap the binoculars and select what you see. The data is saved, analytically processed and accesible. Users can edit and create their own observation “tags” in account set up. This is where many of our customers are having some fun with this.

That’s right…”Bigfoot” is becoming a very popular observation tag for families and friends hunting the same property. “Black Panther” is another one I see being added.

I’ve seen a number of misleading deer management micro-trends erupt and then dissipate over the decades. The most recent is a push to stop the mowing of fall/winter, annual/perennial food plots in the early spring and as needed throughout the warm season. Regenerative farming practices which focus on soil quality through organic farming practices, not year-round, wildlife forage needs is one of the causes of this new social media and Pod driven miss-direction. That’s a whole other debate for another day.

These plots planted in cereal grains with Plantler annual and perennial mixes were mowed as I instructed my client a few weeks ago, prior to me visiting the property today. If they hadn’t been mowed the maturing cereal grains, brassicas and weeds would be bolting and seeding, providing no nutrition for whitetails and out competing these high protein legumes and forbs which deer are grazing like crazy now. We saw some wild turkey hens with very young poults in these same plots out bugging. Early spring mowing releases these most beneficial perennial plants. New tender growth, post-clipping, erupts producing optimal deer forage and excellent bugging ground for turkey poults as well as many other game & non-game wildlife species…AND pollinators!

You might say I’m a certified FPFI (Food Plot Failure Investigator). A friend who will remain unnamed called me recently with unexplainable food plot failure using Plantler seed in coastal GA. He sent me the video and said for the last two years plants would emerge, look great for a few weeks and then brown or die leaving bare soil spots.

I began my questioning:
A. Soil quality and soil samples ✔️
B. Planting date, methods, seed depth, adequate rainfall ✔️
C. Deer browse pressure and over-browse indicators ✔️
D. What herbicides were used…

He said they sprayed with Glyphosate to kill weeds before planting. I asked did they clean the tank adequately using a tank cleaner agent before using it. All that checked out. I asked did they only use Glyphosate. His answer was “well my partner did it and he added something else in a red bottle”. I asked what it was and more importantly, what are the active ingredients (AI). He called his partner and gave me the product name. I searched it and the AI was Imazapyr (isopropyl amine salt of imazapyr). This is the same AI in product brands like Arsenal and Chopper. It is a broad spectrum killer that remains soil active for many months.

Lesson for today: READ the PRODUCT LABEL and search for information online about the AI in any herbicides you use on your food plots.
