At Athens Area Mediation Service (AAMS), we believe that conflicts don't have to divide us. For years, we have provided Athens County residents, families, and organizations with a neutral, supportive space to resolve differences through mediation and dialogue.

To keep these vital services accessible to everyone in our community—regardless of their financial situation—we rely on local support.

We’ll gather with Mara Giglio, Director of Appalachian Peace and Justice Network to explore Community Resilience. Collective trauma has created lots of stress and conflict among us. We are offering free community resiliency training to strengthen our self-regulation skills.

In 2020, APJN’s Director was trained by the Trauma Resource Institute (traumaresourceinstitute.com) to teach the Community Resiliency Model (CRM). CRM teaches three evidence-based wellness skills that help us self-regulate. Self-regulation skills help us stay in and get back to our zone of regulation (ZE). When we are in our ZE, we have lower sympathetic activation, lower levels of cortisol, and more access to our thinking brain as well as efficient termination of fight, flight, or freeze. Self-regulation skills help us be our best self and meet our basic needs in healthy ways.

Athens Area Mediation Service (AAMS) is delighted to continue partnering with the Athens County Department of Job and Family Services (ACDJFS) on the Rural Empowerment project supported by the JAMS Foundation and the National Association for Community Mediation. Through this project, AAMS makes mediation services available to customers and staff of ACDJFS. In doing so we support the fine work of ACDJFS toward peace and justice in the Athens County community.
