Did you know? With non-Tesla DC fast chargers converting/adding to NACS plugs, you will still need to have CCS enabled even though the plug fits your Tesla. This is because the underlying communication protocol is still CCS not Tesla’s proprietary SWCAN. A retrofit is still needed for Model 3 built before Oct 2020 (silver trim around windows).

For those who can't wait for the official CCS retrofit from Tesla because we all know how the cold weather affects our range, the DIY retrofit is now easier than ever. I helped a friend do his recently. He got the Gen4 ECU from a Tesla SC by being assertive and mentioning to them that this part is not restricted as they originally claimed. Also, there's no need to wait for a software update. You can now go into service mode at any time and just reload the software. Once CCS is enabled, then you can easily buy the CCS adapter from the Tesla store.

If your EV is made BEFORE October 2020, all you need to do is swap out the charge port controller (ECU) to a Gen4 ECU which is Tesla part number 1537264-00-B and add a third party wire harness called "A Bundle of Wires with a Board" in line with the Gen4 ECU.
