I love writing about people’s aspirations. One goal I often hear from friends and colleagues is a desire to move up in their organization through a promotion. So, over the next couple of weeks, I’m going to post some advice on this topic, starting with how to ASK for a promotion.
Unless you are applying for an active job opening, the likelihood of asking for a promotion AND getting one immediately isn’t great. But a compelling question to ask your boss is, “How do I need to grow in order to be considered for the FILL IN THE BLANK job?” This does two things: 1) it tells your boss that you want a promotion and 2) it asks for a pathway to get that promotion.
Listen to the input you receive and then ask one follow-up question – “If I put together a plan to do XYZ, can we meet regularly to talk about my progress?” This question shows planning on your part and ensures your possible promotion continues to be a conversation topic.
Make it happen!
