Last month I worked with a small business that was preparing to terminate an employee for ongoing attendance issues.

Before moving forward, I completed a full HR review of the situation. During that review, I identified a potential compliance concern involving medical documentation that hadn’t been fully evaluated.

Instead of rushing into a termination, we:

1. Reviewed the documentation.
2. Ensured the proper HR process was followed.
3. Coached leadership on next steps.
4. Created a documented improvement plan.

The result? The employee improved, the company reduced its legal risk, and leadership gained confidence in handling similar situations in the future.

Employment decisions don’t become expensive because someone intended to do the wrong thing. They become expensive when the right HR process isn’t followed.

A single employment claim can cost businesses tens of thousands of dollars in attorney fees, settlements, and lost productivity, even if they ultimately win.

That’s why proactive HR isn’t just about compliance. It’s about protecting your business before problems become costly.

Small Business Owners: One HR Mistake Can Cost More Than You Think

Many growing businesses wait until there’s a problem to think about HR. By then, it can already mean:
• Employee complaints
• High turnover
• Attendance issues
• Compliance risks
• Poor documentation
• Managers handling situations inconsistently

Strong HR isn’t just about policies, it’s about protecting your business while creating a workplace people actually want to stay in.

Here are 5 areas every business should regularly review:

1. Employee Handbook
Is it updated and compliant with current laws and company practices?

2. Corrective Action Process
Are employee issues being documented consistently and professionally?

3. Hiring & Onboarding
Are new hires getting a clear, structured experience from day one?

4. Attendance & Leave Practices
Are managers handling PTO, call outs, and leave requests fairly and consistently?

5. Workplace Communication
Do employees understand expectations, policies, and accountability?

A proactive HR strategy helps businesses reduce risk, improve culture, and operate more efficiently.

At Solutions with Angie | Consulting & Advisory, I help businesses simplify HR, strengthen compliance, and create clearer workplace processes without overcomplicating things.

Message this page if your business could use HR support, policy guidance, employee relations assistance, or handbook review help.

If you don’t have documentation… it didn’t happen.

From an HR perspective, this is one of the biggest risks businesses take.

Verbal conversations won’t protect you.
Assumptions won’t protect you.

Documentation does.

If you’re unsure whether your current processes would hold up, that’s something worth fixing sooner rather than later.

One of the hardest parts of running a business?

Managing people.

No one really prepares you for:
• Difficult conversations
• Holding employees accountable
• Making termination decisions

And yet these are the moments that matter most.

You don’t have to navigate those alone.

That’s what HR support, like myself, is for.

A lot of business owners think HR support means hiring a full time HR Manager.

It doesn’t.

You can have expert HR support without the full time cost.

That’s exactly what I do.
I help businesses handle employee issues, stay compliant, and put the right processes in place.

If you’ve ever thought “I wish I had someone to handle this…”
That’s where I come in.

Let’s connect!

Most small businesses don’t have an HR problem until they REALLY have an HR problem.

By then, it’s usually:
• A termination gone wrong
• A compliance issue
• Or an employee situation that’s escalated too far

Most of this is preventable.

Having the right HR structure in place early saves you time, money, and stress later.

If you're not sure where your risks are, I can help you identify them before they become problems.

Message me and I’ll walk you through it.

🚨 Thinking about firing an employee?

Before you do… make sure you have these 3 things:

Documented performance issues
Consistent enforcement (not just with the employee)
Clear communication of expectations

Most companies skip at least one of the above and that’s where risk starts.

If you’re dealing with this right now, message me before you make the final call.

I've had a few people contact me over the last 24 hours curious as to what "HR" is and what it means.

Human Resources (HR) is the function within an organization that focuses on supporting people and helping the business succeed through its workforce. HR covers seven core areas that work together to manage the employee experience from hiring to long-term growth. These areas include recruitment and selection, performance management, learning and development, succession planning, compensation and benefits, HR information systems, and HR data and analytics. Together, these HR basics ensure employees are hired fairly, paid appropriately, supported in their development, evaluated effectively, and prepared for future leadership, while also using data and technology to make informed, compliant decisions that align people strategies with organizational goals.
