Friday, we will wear red to shine a light on heart disease which is the leading cause of death for women in the United States. But heart disease doesn’t just affect women. It impacts babies, families, and millions of Americans every single day.

Congenital heart defects remain the #1 birth defect, affecting thousands of newborns each year. Many of these tiny fighters face open-heart surgery before they ever leave the hospital. At the same time, heart disease in adults is often silent, overlooked, or misunderstood - especially in women, whose symptoms can look very different than men’s.

National Wear Red Day is about awareness, education, and action:
• Know your numbers
• Pay attention to symptoms
• Advocate for yourself and your loved ones
• Support research and early detection

Black ice is a serious hazard, and even short trips can quickly become dangerous. Nearly invisible, it forms when moisture freezes on roadways, often on bridges, overpasses, and low-lying areas.

We know some employees must drive despite inclement weather. If your team is on the road today, share these quick reminders to help reduce risk and prevent accidents:

• Stay calm and avoid sudden movements
• Ease off the accelerator
• Steer gently into the skid
• Avoid slamming the brakes
• Know your brakes:
– ABS: steady pressure (pulsing is normal)
– Standard: gently pump

Winter driving requires extra awareness. If an on-the-job accident occurs, the Applied Risk Solutions team is available to support our clients and assist with the claims process.

We know many employers have teams who cannot avoid driving during inclement weather. During today’s icy conditions, the goal is simple: reduce risk, prevent injuries, and avoid costly claims whenever possible. If your employees must be on the road, these reminders can help them respond safely if they encounter black ice:

1️⃣ Stay calm
Sudden reactions can make a skid worse. Staying composed helps drivers regain control.

2️⃣ Ease off the accelerator
Do not accelerate. Allow the vehicle to slow naturally until traction improves.

3️⃣ Steer into the skid
If the vehicle slides left, gently steer left. Avoid sharp or overcorrecting movements.

4️⃣ Avoid slamming the brakes
Hard braking can lock wheels and increase loss of control.

5️⃣ Know your brakes
• ABS brakes: Apply firm, steady pressure. Pulsing is normal.
• Standard brakes: Gently pump to prevent wheel lock-up.

Winter driving requires heightened awareness and patience, especially for employees on the job. If an on-the-job accident does occur, our team remains available to assist with claims and support our clients through the process.
