As CPAs and advisors (advisors being the key term here), we don’t want to surprise our clients with tax news. Tax surprises are like getting a huge birthday cake, full of broccoli, that’s still high in calories.

For me and most of the people I work with, we add value by knowing what’s going on with our clients. When we’re in the loop, we can do what is one of our main and most satisfying goals – minimizing your tax liability.

It’s early in the year. A package arrives.

The trait that I place the most weight on as an instructor, other than knowledge of the topic, is caring. I care whether my team understands a topic, software, etc. I genuinely want them to excel at what they're doing, to master the tax-y things, and to get excited when something clicks and they understand it. When I see that light go off in someone's head, I get excited for them. The better they can do their job, the better I can do mine.

Understanding the four stages of learning and ensuring your team has the self-awareness to get through it is a crucial step to provide a learning environment that allows your new hires to thrive. The more they know, the more they grow!

Have you ever sat through training, a class, or continuing professional education and found yourself thinking: "Clearly, this training isn't effective..

When was the last time you thanked someone on your team? Expressing gratitude to your team is important. I've heard people make comments like "I'm not going to thank them for doing their job." It's not about that. When I say thank you to my team, I'm not just thankful for the fact they completed a task. 2020 has been such a challenging year, for everyone. I'm thankful for the fact they come to work, with a great attitude, despite all of the fluff that 2020 has dumped on them. I'm thankful for the fact they lift each other up, they're eager to learn, they want feedback, and they give feedback. Most of all - I'm thankful for the fact they're part of my team. Take a moment today to tell someone why you're thankful for them!

Expressing gratitude is more important than you think! Take a moment to stop, say 'thank you' and read our top 5 benefits of gratitude in the workplace.

Last week, I had the pleasure of leading a DEI conversation with my team. Originally I was nervous, so I did a couple hours of research to make sure I had my ducks in a row before we started. One of the most impactful things I came across was someone who said that we should shift our thinking of what the workplace is.

We should think of the workplace as a place where people can connect, unify, and heal. The workplace is a place where different generations, perspectives, and ethnicities are already oriented toward a common goal.

It's so important that we be mindful of others, their thoughts, and the impact that the world has on them. Being inclusive means that everyone can come in and be themselves.

One of our key responsibilities as leaders is to make sure everyone on our team can come to work and bring their authentic self, which is their best self!

Great article by Amy Morin, LCSW - "Reaching your greatest potential doesn’t require you to work harder by adding desirable habits to your already busy life. Instead you can work smarter by eliminating the routines that erode effectiveness and siphon off mental strength." There are some fantastic takeaways from this article about shifting your mindset for growth and happiness.

Oust the weak links in your thinking and behavior patterns.

Great article by Jacob Morgan about creating healthy boundaries! According to Gallup's State of the American Workplace 2017, 53% of employees say that a role that allows them to have greater work-life balance is “very important” to them. Boundaries help protect people from burning out, feeling underappreciated, undervalued, or worse.

"Having patience means being able to wait calmly in the face of frustration or adversity, so anywhere there is frustration or adversity—i.e., nearly everywhere—we have the opportunity to practice it." This article walks through three ways to cultivate patience - reframing the situation, practicing mindfulness, and practicing gratitude.

Good things really do come to those who wait.

I hear a lot of people complain about virtual meetings and that they're "Zoom'd" out. While it's been a tough year, I think it's important to look on the bright side and focus on promoting and encouraging positivity. I'm thankful that we have the virtual resources we do to stay connected. I love having the chance to catch-up with my team and my contacts virtually. We couldn't do it without the virtual tools that we have! (Plus I get to sit in my dream virtual garden each time)

Researchers at Google sent new hires an email reminding them that top performers at the organization regularly “Ask questions, lots of questions!” and “Actively solicit feedback — don’t wait for it.” Just listing that out helped new hires practice and develop those skills, increasing their productivity by 2%, an increase of about $400 million per year.

Given that many of us suddenly shifted to remote work earlier this year, we encourage teams to write Covid-specific “It’s okay to…” lists.

Creating an “It’s okay to…” list will help your employees feel less anxious.
