29 years ago, at high noon I said "I do," one of the greatest moments of my life. We read 1 Corinthians 13 that day and since then my wife has lived every word of that passage. She has stood with me through every mission, every deployment, every move, every job, every business built, every version of myself I had to become to get here.

She's steady when I'm not. She laughs at the same things I do after all these years, well just some stuff. She knows me better than anyone on this earth and still chooses to love me. People say I'm a lucky man. That's not luck. That's a woman who shows up, with compassion, grace and love every single day, for her husband.

29 years and I love her more today than I did yesterday, but not as much as I will tomorrow.

Happy Anniversary, Mrs. Risco. Here's to the next 2,900. Yeah I said 2,900!!

STK Atlanta ruined my 29th wedding anniversary lunch. Three separate steaks, three separate failures, and a bill that added insult to injury.

I ordered a 16 oz ribeye, medium rare. The first arrived charred well past medium well — inedible. I sent it back. The kitchen's idea of a fix was a completely different cut, a cowgirl bone-in ribeye, not what I ordered. Sent that back too. The third attempt was finally the right cut and still overcooked. I've eaten ribeyes for years and know exactly what medium rare looks and feels like and should taste like. STK's kitchen does not.

By the third failure I gave up sending food back, not because it was acceptable, but because I refused to let their incompetence hijack the entire celebratory afternoon.

The bill made it worse. Full price charged for two steaks, one credited back for "kitchen error" — the least they could do after three attempts at one plate. Then I found a $2 charge for "on the rocks" on my Kettle One. Charging separately for ice in a cocktail is the kind of nickel-and-diming that has no place on a $500+ tab, let alone one that already represents a wasted anniversary and a horrible culinary experience.

The manager on duty, India, treated our complaint as an inconvenience to her, not a failure on the restaurant's part. At no point did management take ownership of what should have been an easy fix on attempt one. Nothing more than the obligatory check-in.

Our server Nyla was the only reason this didn't end in a full refund demand. She was attentive, apologetic, and clearly embarrassed by a kitchen that wasn't backing her up. She's a superstar!

STK Atlanta cannot execute a simple medium rare ribeye. And they'll charge you $2 for the ice in your drink, while they botch it. Choose literally anywhere else for an occasion that matters. I will definitely never return.

The version of me that had no systems worked harder and produced less than the version of me that built them.

Not slightly less. Dramatically less. The work didn't change. The business didn't change. The removal of friction changed everything. You don't need a complicated system. You need a consistent one. Simple and repeatable beats complex and ignored every single time.

This is not a vacation exercise. It's a diagnostic. Everything that breaks reveals a dependency on you that you haven't solved yet. Everything that runs fine is proof you've already built something real. The goal of every system is to make your presence optional. Start with one function.

I used to wake up and not know what I was supposed to be working on. I thought that was freedom.

It wasn't. It was drift. Freedom in business doesn't come from having no structure. It comes from having structure you trust — so you know exactly what today requires and you can be fully present for it. Clarity about what to do is how you stop second-guessing every hour you spend.

I didn't build this ecosystem to be impressive. I built it because I know what happens to businesses that don't have what it provides.

I watched capable businesses lose from the inside of the government machine for thirty years. I watched founders exhaust themselves because nobody had ever given them the structure to build without burning. I watched institutions miss their potential because they had vision without systems. Everything I've built — every program, every tool, every framework — is an answer to something I watched go wrong. That's not a brand story. That's a reason.

The best leaders I've worked with never stopped being students of their craft.

Not in a performative way — not reading every business book that trends on LinkedIn. In a disciplined way. They studied the environments they operated in. They sought out people who had done what they were trying to do. They asked better questions than they gave answers. Leadership competence is not a destination. It's a practice. The leaders who stop learning are the ones whose organizations eventually reflect that stagnation.

The most dangerous phrase in a solopreneur's vocabulary: 'I'll just handle it myself.'

Sometimes true. Often a trap. Every time you handle something yourself that a system could handle, you are choosing to be the bottleneck in your own business. The question isn't whether you can do it. It's whether you should be the one doing it every single time. Those are different questions with different answers.

The federal government will spend more with small businesses this fiscal year than at any point in history. Most of that money will go to the same businesses it always goes to.

Not because the opportunity isn't available. Because access is concentrated among the firms that figured out the system early and built the relationships that keep them in the rotation. The goal of every small business development program, every set-aside, every certification preference is to broaden that access. The programs work. But they don't work automatically. They work for the businesses that approach them with strategy instead of hope.

The Enterprise Journey isn't a framework I invented. It's the map I wish I'd had.

Every stage I've described — Spark, Ignite, Momentum, Traction, Velocity, Altitude, Summit, Icon, Legacy — I have lived. Not observed. Not studied. Lived, in real organizations with real stakes and real consequences. The map exists because I made wrong turns at almost every stage and learned what the right turn looked like after the fact. If I can give someone the map before they reach the intersection, that's worth something real.
