I'm grateful to be part of this important conversation in Insight from the Illinois CPA Society.

In The Business Case for Supporting Caregivers, we explore how caregiving responsibilities are quietly shaping today’s workforce, and why firms that acknowledge and support caregivers are better positioned to retain talent, sustain performance, and build long-term resilience.

This piece looks at the real business implications of caregiving, along with practical ways firms can support people through flexible policies, thoughtful leadership, and a broader definition of what commitment and contribution look like over the course of a career.

Thank you to ICPAS for creating space for this dialogue and for continuing to elevate issues that matter to the profession.

As America's population continues to live longer, more professionals are stepping into caregiving roles for aging parents, partners, or other family members—often while managing rigorous careers. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), more than 37 million people were prov...

What actually keeps people at accounting firms, and what quietly pushes them out?

In this episode of MOVE Like This, I sit down with Kristi Epp and Amber Schrock of Frazier & Deeter for a real conversation about leadership, retention, and belonging in a profession that’s changing fast. We talk about why younger professionals are rejecting the old busy-season model, how firms can build cultures that support long-term growth (without burning people out), and why pay equity and psychological safety matter more than ever.

If you’re a firm leader thinking about succession, retention, or how to support your people in a more honest, human way, this conversation is for you.

Is your firm's flexibility policy working — or quietly penalizing the people who use it?

Flexibility without structure harms women and caregivers. Remote workers feel pressure to be "always on" while missing out on the visibility that shapes advancement.

The fix? Tie performance to results, not presence. Model flexibility at the top. Protect visibility for remote workers. Set real boundaries.

Check out my new article in CPA Practice Advisor → https://bit.ly/47Lts5Z

Remote and flexible workers often report that flexibility comes with an unspoken catch: they must be reachable at all times to “prove” they’re working.

Employment attorney Aislinn Sroczynski joins to break down what many are struggling with: how to maintain meaningful inclusion efforts without exposing your organization to unnecessary legal risk.

The legal foundation hasn't changed. Title VII, the ADA, the ADEA, and the Equal Pay Act still govern employment decisions. Most DEI initiatives that were lawful before remain lawful now.

Inclusive hiring practices, diverse interview panels, bias training, open ERGs, and supplier diversity programs are legal but quotas, closed-group ERGs, or employment decisions tied directly to race or gender are crossing a line (sound familiar?)

In the end, the greatest risk to firms is reacting impulsively.

The 2025 Report exposes the "flexibility fatigue" plaguing the profession: firms announce progressive policies, then quietly penalize anyone who takes advantage of them.

The pattern is predictable:
• "Flexible" schedules become 24/7 availability expectations
• Part-time professionals get labeled "mommy track"
• Remote workers are passed over for leadership roles
• Colleagues resent coverage without structural planning

True flexibility requires intentional design, leadership modeling, and firm-wide accountability

What does it mean to lead with humanity in accounting today?

In the latest episode of MOVE Like This, I sat down with Sarah Elliott, CPA-turned-leadership coach and co-founder of , about what it takes to create human-centric leadership in the profession.

We explored how leaders can empower rather than control, foster belonging, and lead with humility, courage, and curiosity. Sarah also shared insights from Intend2Lead’s research on new partners, highlighting gaps in feedback, development, and transparency around compensation.

Here are some of the most thought-provoking takeaways:
• Belonging matters: When people feel safe to be themselves, they thrive.
• Curiosity is key: It opens doors to innovation and connection.
• Transparency builds trust: Honest conversations about partner economics can prevent disengagement.

This conversation is packed with ideas for building cultures where people and firms can grow together.
