BAD RAP - Don’t allow the rare exceptions to professionalism tarnish the heroic work of the majority. What do I mean by that? There are approximately 50 Million law enforcement interactions annually in the United States. 20 Million as a result of a traffic stop, with 1%-2% of those encounters involving the use or threat of force.

There are approximately 750,000 sworn law enforcement officers in the United States with women representing roughly 14% of the total.

Long-term trauma in U.S. law enforcement officers manifests as chronic mental and physical health issues, including a 2-4 times higher risk of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and su***de compared to the general population. Chronic exposure to critical incidents leads to burnout, high rates of cardiovascular disease, sleep disorders, and unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol misuse, often compounded by a, "tough," culture that discourages seeking help.

In the late 1970s, the odds of "success" - defined as stable housing, employment, and economic independence - for a male aging out of the foster care system in New York City were exceptionally low. During this period, youth often "emancipated" at 18 with little to no support, facing high risks of homelessness, incarceration, and unemployment.

** The answer to this is never “SO WHAT.” **

Key Challenges and Outcomes for Young Men (Late 1970s Context):

* Homelessness: Roughly 20% to 30% of foster youth became homeless “immediately” upon aging out.
* Incarceration (mostly survival crimes): Nearly 60% of young men who aged out of the foster system were expected to be incarcerated by age 26.
* Educational Attainment: Only about half of youth raised in foster care finished high school, with NYC, in particular, seeing low graduation rates for youth in care.
* Employment: 50% of aged-out youth were expected to be unemployed by age 24.
* Systemic Instability (you don’t know what you don’t know): Many young men leaving the system in this era were unprepared for adult responsibilities, having often experienced multiple, traumatic placement changes
