Trench dangers can turn deadly in seconds. Every excavation brings risks that can change quickly—and workers may have little or no time to react.

The six hazards every crew should watch for:

• Cave-ins — The leading and deadliest trench hazard
• Spoil piles & falling loads — Added weight can trigger a collapse
• Bad air — Toxic gases or low oxygen can incapacitate workers without warning
• Water — Flooding can weaken trench walls and create drowning hazards
• Equipment near the edge — Heavy loads can destabilize the trench and create struck-by risks
• Buried utilities — Contact with gas, electrical, water or other lines can turn a routine excavation into an emergency

Trench safety starts before the first shovel hits the ground. Planning, proper protective systems and a competent person can make the difference between a safe excavation and a tragedy.

Here's another favorite product we saw at the 2026 . These smart safety glasses from Lucyd Armor use a transition lens, which meets the ANSI standard. They also translate into your native language, which is a huge help in a multilingual workforce. Employees can listen to music through the speakers, but you can also turn that feature off if it creates a safety hazard in your environment. You can also create channels where employees can communicate, which helps because you don't have to pull out your phone for conversations, which can create additional distractions.

Caught-in or between injuries are part of OSHA’s Fatal Four, along with falls, electrocutions, and struck-by incidents. The extreme forces involved and limited time to escape make these incidents especially dangerous.

A caught-in or between incident can stop production in seconds—and change a worker’s life forever. OSHA calls these types of incidents one of the “Fatal Four,” meaning the four types of accidents that kill the most workers.

For manufacturing and construction safety leaders, preventing these incidents is about more than OSHA compliance. It’s about protecting your workforce, minimizing costly disruptions, and keeping operations moving.

Our latest article highlights 5 caught-in or between hazards that put workers at risk every day and practical steps to help prevent them.

We loved coming across these hard hat bands at the 2026 . They are available from the Aero Rubber Company Inc and make it easy for clients to identify a visitor or even a trainee. It’s a great visual we often discuss with clients.

New employees are more likely to be injured. This could help other employees on-site watch out for them, provide extra guidance in those early days, and make identification more cost-effective.

We have seen other companies use a different-colored hard hat, which can get costly if you only intend to use it for a short time. Some companies use a hard hat sticker, but those are much harder to identify, and depending on the hard hat's orientation, you may not see it at all.

While a small amount of dirt may not seem dangerous, one square yard of dirt can weigh more than 3,000 pounds. This weighs the same as a compact car. This small amount of dirt is enough to fatally crush and suffocate workers.

A trench can become dangerous in seconds.

Cave-ins may be the most obvious threat, but they’re far from the only one. From underground utilities and hazardous atmospheres to falling equipment, water accumulation, spoil piles, and changing weather conditions, trenching involves multiple hazards that require careful planning.

The key? Don’t let a “quick job” become a shortcut on safety.

✔️ Use the right protective systems
✔️ Have competent person oversight
✔️ Identify hazards before work begins
✔️ Never underestimate changing conditions
