Carapace for July: The Room Where It Happened

Everybody knows, no matter how much you plan the party, everyone always winds up gathering in the kitchen.

Sometimes the rooms where we spend the most time seem to be so mundane…until they don’t. We wanna hear about the time you found Ms. Scarlet in the library with the candlestick. Did your boring office become a war room? Did your bathroom become the unplanned place you gave birth or maybe gave a bath to an unplanned, new family pet? Perhaps you found yourself all of a sudden in conversation with a deity you’d unsubscribed from in a hospital room, sanctuary, or whilst desperately locked in a supply closet.

From far off hotels and hostels to quotidian encounters with gardening sheds and man-caves, regale us with your tales of adventure and mishap, triumph and woe.

Whatever your hyper-located story, we’ll be waiting as we always are on the second Tuesdays of the month, in our favorite room of all time, the back room at Manuel’s Tavern. (Where we were born 16 years ago!) While the show begins at 7p, we encourage folx to get there early to get their orders in with the finest wait staff in town.

These days, it feels like everywhere you turn—social media, Atlanta traffic, the group chat—everyone seems to be spoiling for a fight. Tell us about a time you couldn’t catch a break. Did it feel like you were just running up that hill? Perhaps a family member, neighbor, or work colleague got under your skin or got your goat time and time again.

Maybe your conflicts tend to be of a much more internal variety. Anyone who’s ever (tried to) quit smoking knows about that. Did you go to the mat with a vice, with a mysterious illness, or with your belief in what is right and what is wrong?

Whatever your contentious story, we’ll be waiting and full of equanimity, as we always are on the second Tuesdays of the month, at Manuel’s Tavern. While the show begins at 7p, we encourage folx to get there early to get their orders in with the finest wait staff in town.

So what are you going to do Tuesday night (May 12)? Are you going to come out of your truffle? Or shell?

One of our favorite times of year is the Atlanta Fringe Festival, which showcases some of the best, weirdest theater, dance, puppetry, even audio—from Atlanta & beyond! This year, as always, our live literary Atlanta scene has shown up in style. Daniel Herd and Billie Sainwood can be found at Metropolitan Studios. Audience favorite, Augustus Graves, will be on at 7 Stages. And lots o’ Carapace beloveds—Chetter Galloway, Will Young, Michael Keeton, Sarah Beth Nelson, and Shannon Turner—are joining forces to bring a storytelling show about storytelling shows (so meta!) called Slammed! at The Dynamic El Dorado!

We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to Carapace donors through our Buy Me a Coffee page, Carapace now has a real, grown-up URL: CarapaceATL.com.

We used to have a generic URL with a long string of extra characters. We're also paying for some better services and, due to crossing over a threshold in our list number, we had to start paying for our list.

In honor of the Oscars, we're going with Sinners as this month's theme. So. Many. Juicy. Thoughts. A million ways to take it.

Did you indulge in one of the seven deadlies? Did you get judged by a supposedly holier-than-thou?

Perhaps you thought you should be ashamed of something all your life but came out the other side, vindicated. Take us to the moment when you discovered you didn't get hairy palms, when you let your anger get the best of you, when you found Father McAllister drunk on the communion wine, when you failed the Blue Book exam on Dante's Inferno, or when your lust for life turned into a death wish.

Our original prompt for this month's theme was 99 Problems. Folx seemed to be a bit befuddled by it, so we added in Sinners as maybe a bit broader and easier to run with. Here's more on the theme of 99 Problems...

On Tuesday, April 28, ’s Attic, many of your favorite Carapace storytellers, Chetter Galloway, Samuel Frankel, and Shannon Turner, will be featured at Atlanta Storytellers, “The Songs That Shaped Us.” Each storyteller ties their story to a song, and then a live band plays that song in between the stories. A benefit for Atlanta, we hear tickets are nearly sold out, so make sure to get yours soon.
