Prompt: Any victim of middle school bullies can tell you what it’s like to feel like a freak. Perhaps you stood up to a bully on behalf of someone else. These days, bullies don’t seem to just live outside your locker, between class changes. They’re online, in Atlanta traffic, in the board room and beyond…

Something cool about how the world works these days, though, is that these terms are most often used as points of pride. Do you geek out on a particular little slice of pop culture? Have a special area of your home dedicated to Troll Dolls? I mean, we just came through DragonCon; Halloween is right around the corner. If there’s one thing that’s true about Atlanta, we sure do love donning a costume.

Did you lose your friends at the parade? Knock a candle over or find true love whilst wearing fangs? Mayhap you launched an early online campaign when one of the best shows ever got prematurely cancelled.

You know, marginalized only works when a person or group thinks they’re at the center.

Whatever your tale about where the weird things are, we wanna hear it. We’ll be waiting to get our story freak on, as always on the second Tuesdays of the month at Manuel’s Tavern. While the show begins at 7p, we encourage folks to get there early to get their orders in with the finest wait staff in town.

As a reminder, we welcome story listeners and storytellers alike—just as long as you’re a connoisseur of stories (and of Manuel’s food).

Steely Dan wails, “I don’t wanna do your dirty work.” I mean, who does?

It’s the month of Labor Day, when we (hopefully) think about labor a little more philosophically, pondering our jobs with fresh eyes. Not just the work we have today (if we’re lucky enough to have it), but…all. the. jobs. Those crappy, unfortunate rungs in the ladder climbed along the way, and, more importantly, those out there having to do less-than-desirable tasks on our behalf. (Please, thank a driver now and again.)

Tell us about the time you had to muck out the barn, clean some toilets, change diapers, or found yourself up to your elbows in a completely unexpected mess.

On the other paw, there’s a much more psychological game of “dirty work.” Side eye, sideways conversations, asked to carry out someone’s distasteful request.

Do you have a great story about becoming an unwitting pawn to palace intrigue? Perhaps you were the Keyzer Soze behind the usual suspects. More mundanely, is there a family member who always gets others to do their bidding or needs to be handled with kid gloves? Passive aggressive much?

Whatever your story, we’ll be waiting—with sleeves rolled up—as we always are on the second Tuesdays of the month, at Manuel’s Tavern.
