Benchmarking Matters📊

How does your nonprofit board compare to others in your sector? Many boards never find out until "Leading with Intent."

BoardSource's 2026 study is the only survey that hears directly from both nonprofit Board Chairs and CEOs about how their Boards are really structured, led, and run. The results become one of the sector's most trusted benchmarks and a tool we use with our own clients to spot where a Board is thriving and where it's stalling.

If you're a Board Chair or nonprofit leader, your voice belongs in this year's data. It takes about 15 minutes, and the survey closes August 31st.

Building Capacity to Advance Sustainable and Equitable Communities

Saxon Advisors LLC is proud to collaborate with the Center for Sustainable Communities (CSC), one of the sustainability sector’s most influential and effective community-focused nonprofit organizations.

CSC works at the intersection of environmental justice, public health, economic opportunity, and community resilience. Its work is designed to make communities cleaner, healthier, safer, and better prepared to respond to climate-related challenges, particularly in historically underserved and under-resourced neighborhoods.

Through its active partnerships and broader collaborations with institutions such as Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, CSC helps connect research, education, science, and technology with real community needs. These efforts address critical issues affecting marginalized communities, including:

1️⃣ Air Pollution and Environmental Health
2️⃣ Clean and Affordable Energy
3️⃣ Energy-Efficient and Healthy Housing
4️⃣ Sustainable Transportation
5️⃣ Climate Resilience and Emergency Preparedness
6️⃣ Youth Engagement and STEM Education
7️⃣ Economic Development and Community Revitalization

Saxon Advisors LLC is honored to support CSC as it strengthens its organizational infrastructure, expands its capacity, and positions itself for even greater community impact.

Strong missions require strong organizations. We are proud to help CSC build the capacity needed to sustain and scale this important work.

Board expansion is one of the most consequential and most frequently mishandled moves a nonprofit can make.

Done poorly, it dilutes accountability and adds noise. Done well, it multiplies capacity, expertise, and reach at exactly the moment the organization needs to scale. The difference lies in the process, not the headcount.

A sound Board expansion rests on a few non-negotiable elements:

• Sourcing against defined gaps in skills, networks, and perspectives the current board lacks, not just "good people"
• Rigorous vetting for fit against service requirements and organizational culture, not just credentials
• Structured onboarding that sets role clarity and expectations from day one, so new members contribute immediately instead of ramping up for a year

We applied that discipline with the Jordan McNair Foundation as they moved from a Founding Board to a High-Performance Board.

We're pleased our process translated directly into the outcomes this Foundation set out to achieve.

Our Managing Principal, Henry Saxon, recently sat down with Georgia State Representative Karen Lupton to discuss how Saxon Advisors LLC can support nonprofits in House District 83. Every nonprofit needs four things to thrive:

✅ An Aspirational Vision that deepens mission impact and expansion
✅ High-Performing Boards & Management Teams
✅ Flawless Ex*****on
✅ Verifiable Mission Outcomes that impact people and communities

We are thankful for legislators like Rep. Lupton for investing time with others in building non-profit capacity.

Your board dashboard tells you how your organization did. It won't tell you how your organization compares to others in your sector. We pulled 5 sector benchmarks every human service organization’s board should review in one of your upcoming Board meetings: donor retention, program expense ratio, staff turnover, cash reserves, and board giving participation. Review the numbers, then read our take on why these comparisons matter.

We're at the midpoint to calendar year organizations and for their Boards, CEOs, and finance leaders, this is not a milestone to note. It's a moment to act.

At Saxon Advisors LLC, we’ve spent more than three decades helping nonprofit leadership teams build the governance and financial strategies and implementation pathways that sustain mission-driven organizations. What separates high-performing boards from the rest isn't how they finish the year. It's what they do in the middle of it.

That's why we built our Mid-Year Checklist around six disciplines that matter:

1️⃣ Budget Reforecasting: Compare actuals line-by-line based on performance and any shifting assumptions. Re-project full-year revenue and identify deferred expenses accelerating in H2. Present a revised forecast, base case and downside to your finance committee before Q3.

2️⃣ Board Governance: Assess each trustee's performance against agreed expectations: attendance, committee work, Give/Get fulfillment, and fiduciary literacy. Mid-year is the moment for accountability not year-end.

3️⃣ CEO/ED Mid-Year Review: The board's most important oversight responsibility. Structured feedback on financial stewardship, organizational performance, compliance, staff culture, funder relationships, and board partnership protects both the leader and the organization.

4️⃣ Program Outcomes & Alignment: Map each program to strategic priorities. Flag underperformance early. Funder compliance issues discovered at year-end are exponentially harder to resolve.

5️⃣ Strategic Plan Progress: Assess each priority or pillar, confirm ownership and resource alignment, and scan for material environmental changes before they become surprises.

6️⃣ Second-Half Planning: Turn mid-year insights into decisions. Calendar H2 grant deadlines. Launch audit preparation. Schedule Annual Board Retreat. Confirm the year-end giving timeline. Begin next-year budget development, no later than October.
