I asked Will Lummus what homeowners are asking for right now in windows and doors.

He answer was simple. Bigger.

More natural light.

Thinner lines, less metal, less show, and more glass.

That's the whole trend.

Lummus supply co is a 101-year-old, fifth-generation business.

They've watched enough product cycles to know the difference between a fad and a shift.

If you're a dealer still stocking and showing the same sizes you sold five years ago, the spec is moving without you.

We were filming at a finished custom home in northeast Georgia last week.

The windows and doors came through one of my clients, so I asked the homeowner how he landed on those products.

He said YouTube.

Then he said there wasn't enough information out there and he had to dig to find anything useful.

This guy wasn't a millennial or Gen Z. He was a boomer, maybe Gen X, and he had a GC doing the work.

He still did the research himself.

Your customer is searching online for the level of detail you talk about every day at the counter.

If you never put it on YouTube or your site, somebody else will answer them.

Greg Rowland went from 40 houses a month to one during the Great Recession.

When we sat down for the Grit Blueprint Podcast, he walked me through what happened and the five-minute decision that helped save the company.

Greg learned construction by hauling lumber, walking roofs, cleaning houses, and paying attention. He calls it a self-imposed apprenticeship.

Today, he owns GR Exteriors, SAM LLC, and HarLand Windows & Doors.

We also talk about why he started making gable vents and columns himself, how he responded when suppliers started installing siding, and the family succession questions he is working through now.

I liked that Greg never rushed to the lesson. He told me what happened first.

And yes, I got him into the pink chair.

Robert King runs Crownline Homes, LLC , and he doesn't use the word subcontractor.

He calls them business partners, and he means it.

Windows, roof, cabinets, and the wood trim finishes all get created, staged, and ordered on the same timeline.

His line about it: the suppliers are instrumental in making sure the home performs at the highest level.

On Lummus supply co , he pointed at the range of products they carry and said the expertise and service level is through the roof.

Luxury builds don't win on materials.

They win on coordination.

Most contractors lose market share slowly enough that they don't notice.

Greg Rowland noticed.

When the suppliers in his market started installing siding themselves, the scope he had built a company around started shrinking.

He didn't fight it on price.

Instead, he added the services his customers needed.

Roofing. Windows.

He turned GR Exteriors into a turnkey business that covers the full exterior.

In this episode of The Grit Blueprint Podcast, Greg shares the five minute conversation he had in 2005 that carried his company through the Great Recession, why diversification between multifamily and single family work is a survival strategy and not a growth strategy, and the one rule he uses across all three of his businesses to build trust.

Greg owns three companies in the Atlanta market: SAM, LLC, GR Exteriors, and is a co-owner of HarLand Windows & Doors.

A window that is off by a quarter of an inch does not tell you on install day.

It tells you three winters later when water is leaking in.

In this episode of Behind The Build, I'm in Monroe, Georgia with Tucker Door & Trim, a two-step distributor that manufactures windows and doors inside a 290,000 square foot facility.

Chris Kotlowski walks us through the entire process of how windows are made at Tucker, from cutting the glass to staging for delivery. Chris shows us the differences in manufacturing processes between their vinyl, PVC, and wood windows. You’ll also see the Billco Manufacturing Inc., GED Integrated Solutions, Inc., and Greller machines that automate tedious tasks and speed up window production.

I rode along on a real delivery and said what most owners never admit out loud.

The driver is the best business card.

Juwan McKnight put it plainly: when something's missing on a job site, he's the first one there.

He has to find the solution, call the store, and get it handled.

Lummus supply co CEO Will Lummus doesn't treat that as a support role.

He told me everybody's the CEO, and the drivers are the CEO of their trucks.

His drivers talk to customers more than he does, and he's leaned into that culture.

Building industry companies don’t lose customers because their people stopped caring.

They lose them because their people don’t feel empowered to fix problems.

In this episode of the Grit Blueprint Podcast, I sit down with Jonathan Harvey, co-owner of HarLand Windows & Doors in Atlanta.

He grew up in a three-generation family moving business, came up through inside sales at a one-step distributor, and now runs a turnkey company built so that the product side and the install side sit under one name.

We get into the jobs that went sideways, what it costs a business when nobody owns the outcome, and how you keep a growing team close to the customer.

Reid Lummus walked me into a space in the Lummus supply co warehouse and told me exactly what's planned for it.

The best showroom in Atlanta.

Fifty by forty.

All windows and doors.

Every brand they carry, in real displays you can open and shut.

Not just the small stuff either.

The big swinging doors and bifolds that are the wow factor of a house too.

They're not holding back any expense.

Here is the truth about independent businesses.

They care in a way big box stores will never match.

I talked with Westley Harbin about why service still wins.

At an independent, the owner can make a decision on one phone call.

No four layers of corporate approval.

Each Harbin store runs as its own profit center, close to the customer.

But it goes deeper than speed.

The people here are invested in the company and in your outcome.

Their kids go to school with your kids.

They run events in your community.

That kind of care will always beat corporate.
