Celebrating Veterans This Week!

YMCA of Metro Atlanta

With more than 18 million veterans in America, there is no shortage of inspiration to follow their shining example of self-sacrifice and dedication to service. In honor of Veteran's Day coming up on Friday, November 11, the YMCA is committed to recognizing and lifting up the valuable contributions of veterans and their commitment to our country and our communities.

For Veterans & Active Military

All veterans and active service men and women are invited to register for a complimentary one-day guest pass to utilize any YMCA of Metro Atlanta facility at no cost to you—now through Saturday, November 12.

The Y also offers ongoing reduced membership fees for Veterans and active Military. Contact your local Y branch for additional information

Service credentials in the form of Military DD214 required.

For All Y Members

On Saturday, November 12, all Y branches will offer a special Sweat Like a Vet group exercise class. Don't worry, you can work at your own pace, and we have lots of modifications! Registration for the Sweat Like a Vet workout opens on Wednesday—reserve your spot on the Y app or online.

For The Community

Write a note to veterans thanking them for their service and drop it by your YMCA, email it to us, or mail it to us at the address below and we'll share it with local veterans.

Mail to: YMCA of Metro Atlanta, 569 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. NW,

Atlanta, GA 30314.

For The Kids

Want to show your support for our veterans? Download these coloring sheets and note pages and create some artwork or a note to honor our vets. Bring them into your Y to be displayed in the branch, or scan them and email them to us to be delivered to local vets. Your artwork may also be featured in our Healthy Together newsletter and on social media. You can also mail in your notes and artwork to the address above.

We hope you'll share this message with family & friends—and especially with veterans—so we can celebrate their service and share these opportunities.

THANK YOU to all veterans, active service men and women, and their families for your service to our country and our communities!

ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® in Memphis, Tennessee, held its annual St. Jude Evening of Hope in Atlanta on Saturday, October 22, at Mercedes Benz Stadium.

Emcee for the evening was Rick Folbaum, anchor news for Atlanta News First, Atlanta’s CBS affiliate station.

Among the speakers for the evening were Priscilla Hubbard who chaired the Evening of Hope Committee that assisted in making the event a big success with over $500,000,00 raised. A big part of that figure came from a live auction and a silent one.

Particularly moving were the remarks from the mother of Carson, who lived through multiple rounds of chemotherapy during a 16 month period before passing away at just nine years old.

Marilyn Pearlman (front row) joined her fellow members of the Atlanta Lions Club at a recent open House at the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation in Chamblee, Georgia. The highlight of the morning was the unveiling of the bricks in the Tom and Mildred Bingham Memorial Garden. Tom Bingham. The Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation was the dream of a blind man, Atlanta Lions Club member Tom Bingham. In 1949, The Atlanta Lions Club led by Tom Bingham , along with Moultree and Albany, Georgia Lions, each contributed $1,000.00 and the Lighthouse was born. Nearly 1.4 million Georgians are uninsured or underinsured. Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation is committed to filling the gaps that still exist for these Georgians by providing access to low-cost vision services. Rose Silvestro, Atlanta Lions Club vice-president standing next to Marilyn in the front row, was chair of the committee responsible for planting the garden.

I am very proud to be a volunteer for ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® in Memphis, Tennessee.  One of my heroes is prominent Atlanta business leader Priscilla Hubbard, MBA, GCHRM, DBA, committee chair of the annual St. Jude Evening of Hope in Atlanta. The event will take place on Saturday, October 22 at Mercedes Benz Stadium. A St. Jude donor for 25 years, Dr. Hubbard, is the Chief Operating Officer of Atlanta Medical Association (AMA) and the Heritage Fund of Atlanta Medical Association, Inc., the philanthropic arm of the AMA. AMA is one of the oldest African American organizations and the local chapter of the National Medical Association, which is comprised of over 500 physicians, dentists, and pharmacists who are committed to addressing health disparities in the community.
Recently, Priscilla received her Doctor of Business Administration from Northcentral University.
Dr. Hubbard also received the Executive Director of the Year in the Healthcare industry award during the Georgia Minority Business Awards ceremony held in 2018. She is also a recipient of Atlanta’s Top 25 Most Influential Person Award, which will be given during the ceremony in September. She also owns and is President/CEO of YCS Consulting, specializing in human resource consulting, strategic staffing, and executive leadership.
Not only is she president of the Patricia A. Doyle Foundation and vice president of the Board of Southeastern Primary Care Consortium, Inc., Atlanta Area Health Education Center; but also she serves on the boards of the Atlanta Airport Chamber, the Fulton Dekalb Hospital Authority and C.H.O.I.C.E.S. (Center Helping Obesity in Children End Successfully, Inc.)
Priscila has one son and three grandchildren.

Congratulations to the 501 C3 non-profit, Victoria’s Friends (https://www.victorias-friends.org/) for its new website, its inspiring blog, its health scholarships and it first annual gala on November 11.. There is much to be proud of! To quote an article in the Atlanta Constitution in March 2022, “In 2000, Teague founded Victoria's Friends. Their mission is to "individually serve women who are lost and trapped in the helplessness of working in sexually-oriented businesses. As one of only a handful of survivor-led sexual exit organizations in the country, we seek to reach, restore, and equip women in order to help them live healthy, flourishing lives.”

The Vetlanta event at Atlanta’s  Buckhead club this week was spectacular.   It gave 60 plus veterans and supporters of veterans an opportunity to learn more about how the organization connects veterans with the resources they need to thrive. It is a club operated exclusively for veteran social and business networking.
The event was sponsored by the Buckhead Club and Zack Knight, a veteran himself who is marketing chair of Vetlanata, as well as a podcast success coach and leader of a fantastic and inspirational Mastermind group that I am a member of. Among the attendees were Evelyn Lewis, founder of Veterans Health and Wellness Foundation, and Kiana Collins, Keller Williams realtor who supports veterans.
