YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK ...
- If you think you look fat in those pants, you do.
- If you think your presentation will fall flat, it will.
- If you think you aren't going to get, win, or achieve that goal you're working toward - you WON'T.
We've all heard that "As a man (woman) thinks, so is he (she)." We've even nodded our heads in agreement.
Yet, often, we allow those sneaky saboteurs called 'negative thoughts' to take up residence and wreak havoc in our minds.
Your mind is the HQ or the workshop from which the rest of your life is distributed. Whoa!
So what to do? You can't stop yourself from thinking, can you?
Anyone who has tried knows that you can't change poor thought patterns with the snap of a finger.
Here are a few quick tips to help get you started:
1) TAKE STOCK of your internal self-talk to root out and eliminate any negative ones; An easy way to tell is to ask, "Is this thought expansive, edifying, or enlightening, or is it causing anxiety, guilt, shame, hurt, harm, or worry?"
Once identified, acknowledge negative thoughts for what they are - just thoughts, then replace them in your mind, in a journal, and/or out loud, with what is actually true about you or your situation.
(Ex: Negative thought "My hair sucks", Truth: "My hair isn't laying the way I want today. It might be time for a trip to the salon/barber or maybe I can find a tutorial on how to manage my type of hair") **Do this on repeat**
2) REMIND YOURSELF daily of the amazing things that you are and that you do. Because you do, in fact, Rock!
3) PRIORITIZE YOU. It's become cliché', I know, but self-care (whatever that means for you) is truly the fuel that gives you energy to be and to present as your best, most power-filled self.
3) DRESS THE PART - Visualize where you want to you go. What does that look like? What do YOU look like? Make it happen.
In 2012, Psychologists Hajo Adam and Adam D. Galinsky coined the phrase "Enclothed Cognition" to describe the symbolic meaning we ascribe and the physical effects we experience when wearing certain items of clothing.
They showed scientifically that what we think about what we wear and about who we are matters greatly, both in how we show up and how others perceive us. More on this later...
