Start where you are.

You don't need a 12-person development department to begin developing fundraising discipline.

You need a plan.

You need consistent activity.

You need to understand your donors.

You need leadership participation.

And you need to clearly communicate your mission.

Small doesn't mean insignificant.

And it certainly doesn't mean your organization can't become financially stronger.

It’s time to start.

Raise your hand if you’ve heard this before:

“I joined the board because I believe in the mission. I didn’t know I had to fundraise.” 🙋🏾‍♀️

Board fundraising doesn’t have to mean handing every board member a list and telling them to start asking people for checks.

Board members can:

Open doors.

Make introductions.

Share campaigns.

Tell the organization’s story.

Thank donors.

Host conversations.

Invite people into the mission.

And yes, eventually become comfortable making an ask.

“Giving Tuesday is in two months!”

“We need a grant!”

“Can somebody call a sponsor?”

That's exhausting 🥴

Sustainable fundraising is built around three things I teach:

PROCESS + PROCEDURE + FORMULA

Process: What are we doing?

Procedure: Who does what, when and how?

Formula: What activities can we consistently repeat to generate revenue?

Before you start asking everybody for money, stabilize the system behind the ask.
