A Manager’s Responsibilities… Such a broad topic😳↔️. Just as wide as the broad definition of Artist! 🌎🪐. Yet managers must be business minded and keep Artists on track. How does one fit business into art and vice versa?

To try and tackle this topic I (with my friend ) decided to look at four of the top managers in the business and see why they had to say about being a manager. As they say success leaves clues.

An exhaustive list of the attributes of a top manager is near impossible but the post on my site that is linked in my bio has four in depth interviews with: Moe Shailizi the manager for Marshmellow, Reed JD who manages Mr Beast, Scooter Braun of Justin Beiber fame, and Steve Lobel who manages and has managed a stable of hip hops top talent from Scott Storch to Nipsey Hustle to name a few. .
These power players all know first hand what it takes to be successful in management and they each share a variety of wisdom regarding the job and the business. So there is no quick bite in this caption that shortcuts it, but if you listen and take notes to these minds your sure to gain some solid insights. .
So if your a manager or an artist, sitting down and taking the time to absorb the knowledge in these interviews should prove to be quite worthwhile. I found them all informative and grew my understanding of the role of a manager. .
In general the best in the business is always a good place to start especially in a diverse field like management. .

The internet is a powerful resource! Opportunities for self recording, self publishing, self distribution favor artists more than the older models of labels and record stores. Very interesting article on how Artists are using the power they now have access to. Have a good Friday!

Artists without record labels generated $643.1 million in 2018, up 35% from the prior year, according to a new research survey conducted by the music distribution service and alternative record label Amuse alongside MIDIA Research.

This article shows how music labels are using contract interpretation, and court rulings to make more money. I can't necessarily blame them except their profit increases unfortunately comes at the expense of artists and creators quite frequently.

The article is a very interesting read, especially as relates to mechanical royalties, 'licenses', and streaming.

Defending an attempted class action, Warner says it shares revenues received from digital streaming even when it is not contractually obligated to do so.

Copyright Registrations are a fundamental part of the entertainment business. 🎼📖🖋 Use them to protect your investments and creations.

A copyright registration is prima facie evidence of ownership. This means it’s much easier to prove your ownership which is crucial in infringement cases.

🎶check out this music publishing deals info graphic shared by my friend
This graphic illustrates the types of splits in various deals. It give a great overview of how important publishing right are 💯, however the description of each deal type is a bit dated or simply proof of how the business landscape is changing.
For example there are many more admin deals these days (last 2-4 years), (they are no longer rare) which correlate to the higher volume of independent artists making waves and self publishing.
Social media and youtube 🎥📲💻 has created self distribution possibilities that did not exist a decade ago. But not all admin deals are created equal and not all admin companies are solid. Do your homework! 🔍
The internet is changing the business model for sure. Rearch, build the team, and find the right advisors!
Most importantly dont sign any deal you don’t understand!! 💯
