Mary Ellen Garde Coaching Wife, mother, life coach, proud FSU grad Welcome to my page! I'm glad you're here! And, while there may be tears there will also be laughter and joy.

I LOVE what I do and, while change can be hard and you may find yourself in a sticky wicket, I promise to be your guide through the tough times. For those of you who are new to coaching let me just give you a brief synopsis of what it is and isn't. Life coaches work with people to help them find and articulate the areas of dissatisfaction in their lives. Coaching is particularly helpful for those

who feel "that something is missing" or that it's time for a change but are unsure as to where or how to begin the process. We do this through asking powerful questions and breaking through negative thought patterns. Life Coaches encourage their clients to find and trust their own wisdom and instincts so they can achieve maximum joy in their lives! Coaching is NOT psychotherapy, counseling and/or advice giving. Coaches do not tell clients what to do or think. Coaching is not a substitute for therapy. A little about me: I am a wife, mother, proud FSU grad (go Noles!), a friend, a mentor, self help book ju**ie, and lifelong learner. I am a health nut, a self care newbie, a volunteer, a Jesus follower (but not in that creepy way- think more Ann Lamott and Donald Miller- less Tammy Faye and anyone with too much hair and makeup). I have a secret stash of chocolate and some questionable reality TV shows on my dvr- don't judge a woman for her vices. I am a recent graduate of the Martha Beck Life Coach Training Program and I have a Bachelors Degree in Child Development and a Masters Degree in Social Work (both from the aforementioned FSU). If you are ready for more peace, more joy and more fun, please email me to set up a complimentary session. Mary Ellen

Remember no matter how slow you are going... you are still lapping everybody on the couch!

This time of year can be a little dark and gloomy so I do what I can to lighten and brighten; Christmas mugs, journaling and morning routines by the tree and twinkle lights EVERYWHERE 🌟🌟🌟
What do you do to welcome in this season? Does it include multiple strands of battery operated twinkle lights draped over every surface?

Happy Birthday to our first born - the baby that made me a mother. Joey’s not on Instagram but that doesn’t mean I can’t tell all of you what a wonderful son and husband and person he is. He’s always got a smile and a slightly naughty twinkle in his big beautiful blue eyes. I have so much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving Season and this adorable baby who grew into a man I’m so proud of is at the top of my list.

We got back from Hhi yesterday after three weeks. It was supposed to be two but we added an extra week because the weather was gorgeous and both Greg and I can work from anywhere and the rental company gave us a DEAL on the extra week and …because WE COULD!

Being 58 has some perks and I’d like to take this moment to notice and be grateful for them as I drink my coffee (from my South Carolina mug) and look at and smell my new Hilton Head candle (amber, musk and sage). I remember the days when we couldn’t have dreamed of the freedom we would have to spontaneously be able to add a week onto a vacation.

I can honestly say I’ve loved (or at least liked and appreciated) each season of my life and this one is no different. Each comes with perks as well as hardships and pain.

What are you grateful for in this season of life?

Just taking a moment to express a little gratitude for my friend who gifted me with the perfect coffee mug. I’m ridiculous when it comes to my drinking apparatuses- so much so that I actually took this one with me on our vacay to hhi. Thank you Denise for this perfect gift and for your beautiful spirit and friendship!

Also- anyone else weird about mugs or is it just me?

I don’t know if anyone else needed to see this today but I certainly did. Between you and me- I’m a bit hard on myself and also fairly impatient - when I decide to make a change I want it NOW or preferably yesterday. Sometimes this delightful attitude keeps me from seeing that progress (however small and slow) is being made. So if you are trying to make some positive changes and you just aren’t feeling it - try to notice what is changing- your attitude? Your self compassion (let’s def hear it for the self compassion!). Maybe the tiniest little bit of progress that feels too small to mention- MENTION IT!!! And if you’re struggling - please know you’re not alone …and that there are people who love you and are here to help

What’s Saving My Life 10/21/22

If you’ve ever worked with me I’ve asked you to create a sensory love list. It’s such a simple tool but if you’re stuck in a rut it can quickly help you ascertain what you can do to begin to find a way out.

All you have to do is answer these questions :
ā¤ļøWhat do I love to see?
ā¤ļøWhat do I love to smell?
ā¤ļøWhat do I love to taste?
ā¤ļøWhat do I love to touch?
ā¤ļøWhat do I love to hear?

Think of as many things as you can for each category and notice what things you’ve been ignoring as well as what senses you easily engage with.

Guess what comes up in every category for me? I love the smell, the taste, the feel, the sound and sight of the ocean so I try to get here as often as I can. And when I can’t - I check my list for other ways to find some joy!

Sometimes the word gratitude can feel like too much - if that’s you right now- give the ā€œwhat’s saving my life right nowā€ prompt a try. It doesn’t have to be anything monumental ; sometimes for me it’s a tv show, a salad, a pair of cozy socks - the only ā€œ right ā€œ answer is the truth.

So… what’s saving your life today?

Afternoon plans.
The weather on the island is sunny with a sweatshirt (is there anything more delicious?) so when I finished work I biked it down with Us Against You (the second book in the Beartown series). All I need now is a dolphin to swim by and my day is complete.

This quote sent to me by my friend Kim (thanks !!) is exactly what I was trying to convey in my last post.

Most of us run from the kind of rest Mr. Heller speaks of here; we fill our days with activity and productivity and tell ourselves we will rest later- when we have time.

After the last few years some of us may fear the quiet because it feels like sadness (spoiler alert: it is) and we’re afraid we might get swallowed up by it and never feel the spark of rowdiness again (spoiler alert: you won’t be swallowed and you WILL get your spark back).

Allowing the time and space for all the feelings has been one of the best things I’ve done in a good long while.

Who needs to rest? Anyone fighting the urge? Let’s get curious about that this week.

I’ve been taking a bit of a sabbatical from posting here - I love social media and connecting with you all but it can also be a rabbit hole that I find myself going down with no real end in sight. So I took a little break and I have some ideas for moving forward that feel like love and freedom and peace. Stay tuned for that and more!

While I’ve been absent here I’ve not been absent from my actual life! I’ve been busy with my family and friends and two life changing retreat type trips - thank you to and for giving me time and space to do some dreaming on both coasts! I’m reminded once again how important it is to retreat from your daily life every now and again- it clears away the clutter and cobwebs and makes room for new things to bloom! Plus reading by the ocean, sharing coffee and cocktails with old and new friends, and swinging with my little sis are some of my favorite things!!!!

Yep …I’m ready for some new things- anyone else????

The last few weeks have been kind of … a lot. You may have noticed my lack of usual daily posts and here’s why. I’m taking care of myself and protecting my energy in the best ways I know how: journaling and practicing gratitude, getting on the bike and cycling it out (a million thank you’s to ), talking to friends , reading great books (mostly happy ish ones), getting coached, doing my own work (thank you .katie ) and eating delicious foods that make me happy (this is change your life chicken shawarma with my first attempt at both homemade pickled onions and tabbouli- pretty sure my Sitty would be proud)

There’s more of course: peonies from Trader Joe’s and long coffee dates with friends who ā€œget ā€œ me and my new summer drink and my family and Tates blueberry cookies (omg).

I’d love to hear how you’re taking care of yourself in this season? Popsicles? Real Housewives? Trashy novels? You will get no judgement here- just love and gratitude for sharing what’s saving your life this summer.
