Had the opportunity and pleasure to see the exhibition David Driskell: Icons of Nature and History at the Cincinnati Art Museum this weekend. This is the first major exhibition of the work of Driskell since his passing in April 2020. This exhibition carefully crafts a timeline from his art studies at Howard University where Driskell was influenced by faculty members Lois Mailou Jones and James Wells. His art students as Fisk University, Bowdoin College and University of Maryland were further inspiration to him as well as the turbulence of the civil rights movement in the 1960’s. Driskell made his summer home in Maine for decades. The tall trees that surrounded his home and studio are captured in his later work. Viewers may be surprised to learn that Driskell kept a journal. To see David Driskell in his own hand describe his plan for the day accented by a small sketch was a delight.
