Leaders move fast - and for good reason!

We have a lot on our plate. We’ve honed our intuition over the years to make quick and sharp decisions. We see solutions fast, often because of the build-up of our experiences.

But the best leaders know at times to switch out of this mode to a slower gear. When relating with others, when gathering information, when building influence with key stakeholders, the most effective leaders understand the power of pure listening. Not thinking about what you’ll say next, not getting distracted by other more important to-do’s, not jumping ahead or interrupting.

Just listening and seeking to understand.

Where do you need to up your listening? Who could benefit from your listening? What will help you to move into a slower gear so that you can give others your undivided attention?

“What are you thankful for?”
It’s a popular question around Thanksgiving every year, as we take time to reflect on the many blessings of our year. Whether you saw health, financial growth, and self-development; a loving family, shelter, and improvements in your marriage; or simple things like sunshine and coffee - I challenge you to ponder your actionable response to gratitude.
If you’re thankful, what changes? Consider how you can show your gratitude to others.
It might look like an extended conversation, helping to cook, giving generous hugs, writing a thank-you card, slowing down to gift your presence, expressing kindness and patience… We have been given much! We can give much as result.
I guarantee you that you will be enriched when you genuinely express your gratitude.

When was the last time you thanked someone who helps you? Whether they got to you to the place you are now, support you as you pursue your ultimate career, or work for you in achieving everyday goals – you owe much to many people.
Take some time to consider what others have done for you. How can you let them know that you’re grateful?

Are you aware of how you handle stress?

The last time you were required to act in a pressured situation, what was your response?

Snapping at people, shutting down, or freezing up are all common responses to stress, and very few people are often above one or the other. Stressful situations are some of the most important deciding moments in a process, because how we respond sets the tone and framework for whatever comes next. Slowing down, taking a deep breath, and using a few seconds to evaluate and even ourselves out emotionally can change the situation for the better.

How would you like to see yourself handle stress? What can you do to develop those habits?

What are you?
A leader? A parent? A daughter? A son? A spouse? A coworker?

Given your role, what if your primary focus was on being the best you could be? Unifying your tasks into one purpose is much simpler than trying to keep track of doing individual pieces “better”.

For today, take a break from analyzing what you’re doing wrong, and spend intentional time considering and acting on what it would take to be the best leader you can be, the best parent you can be, or the best you that you can be.

How can you be the best you today?

Leadership has many facets, but this week, we’re thinking about these three: humility, clarity, and courage.

In the words of C.S. Lewis, humility is not thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less. Leaders spend intentional time considering the needs of others.

Clarity plays into communication and vision. Leaders who nail clarity are themselves clear on their goal. They’ve made sure all team members know the essential part they play in accomplishing the mission.

Lastly, courage is the ability to do something that frightens one: strength in the face of pain or grief. Make no mistake, leadership is filled with many difficulties. Courageous leaders do not back down, but step up to make hard choices.

How will you exercise these three essentials – humility, clarity, and courage – today, as a leader?

Pay attention to your story.

What are themes that have always been a part of your story? Maybe you’re a go-getter, someone others turn to for guidance, or someone who overcomes tough challenges. Take time to ponder how you would best use that theme in the future.

The best themes in our lives are often great predictors of our future story.

How will you utilize this insight into who you are with the knowledge of who you want to be?

Where have you been driven by what others say about you, rather than by who you are?

Being a leader does require attentiveness to the outside world: your industry, the economy, your competition. But you as a leader do not exist for the applause and criticism of those around you, nor should you be driven by outside comparison and opinion. Your role is primarily inward-facing: on the success, engagement, and health of your company and your team.

In what ways do you need to change your focus?

Think about the best team meetings you have been a part of. What set them apart?

No matter the type, the ideal team meeting is one with clear goals, and therefore well-utilized time. For a status meeting, that might look like using an agenda, addressing your team’s items first, and asking for feedback as you update everyone on next steps and decisions. A problem-solving meeting sticks to overcoming a specific challenge that impacts the whole team, and finding a solution that works well for everyone. A brainstorming meeting involves the whole team efficiently searching for and presenting new ideas, and that’s it. Most employees notice when their time is used up by unnecessarily spent, ill-planned time; by contrast, a well-planned, well-managed meeting gets things done and flies by.

How can you improve your team’s meetings for everyone involved? What criteria can you put in place to make sure that the meetings you do have are actually needed and using your time well?

Many people who desire to and do lead are eloquent speakers. They seem to know what to say, when to say it, and how to cover their tracks with the right phrases and reassurances, but they lack proof of true leadership.

Despite the impulse to follow a person based on their eloquence, if we rely on experience and not persuasive words it quickly becomes evident that a sole talker can’t make good on what they say. The pith of leadership is in what you do.

Why do people follow you? What would they have to say about their experience under your leadership? Do you cement your words in action and inspire others by doing, not just saying things?

Leaders face difficult decisions and difficult work every day.

Some leaders respond by putting off the hard parts for later. Some leaders respond by complaining.

The greatest leaders look at what they can change and how they can develop to rise up and meet their challenges. They look at what they’re missing and create plans on how to grow. They don’t push off blame or responsibility, but rather model enthusiasm, wise risk-taking, and hard work to their team.

Where are you miserable? How can you make yourself stronger?
