🪜The tariff code (tariff number/tariff classification) for your product is based on a numerical structure determined by the Harmonized System. There is a hierarchy in this numerical structure.
The tariff number can be written in multiple formats. Let's make sure no matter how or where you see a tariff classification you can read and understand it 👍
The Chapter, the 2-digit level, groups commodities/items broadly, eg. 🐗Chapter 1 - live animals, 🌳Chapter 6 - live trees, 🫖Chapter 9 - Coffee, Tea, Mate and spices
The Heading, the 4-digit level, divides the chapter by kind/type within the Chapter, eg. 🐎0101 - Live horses, 🐄 0102 - Live bovine (eg. cattle) animals, 🐖 0103 - Live swine, 🐐0104 - Live sheep and goats
The Subheading, the 6-digit level, provides further breakdown of the kind/type eg. horses vs asses (yes, asses) 🤣 vs other
🇺🇲In the U.S., the duty rate is assigned at the 8-digit level which further describes the commodity eg. purebred vs other
📣And the last 2 digits of the classification in the U.S. is for statistical reporting purposes eg. male vs female
🍎That was a mouthful but we can help you learn how to determine and support your tariff classifications.
