MY CAREER HISTORY

Armed with a Masters in Business Administration, I started my career as a business consultant. I spent over ten years working on Organisational Capability Building, Performance Excellence, and Change Management & Communication interventions for clients in Services, Outsourcing, Technology, Consumer Goods, Engineering, Manufacturing and Not-for-profit companies across India, South & South East Asia, UK, Africa and the United States. A definite perk of my consulting life was the opportunity to engage in conversations with C-suite executives to new managers, subject matter experts to maverick generalists and baby boomers to Gen- Y! The most common denominator of their success, in my understanding, was their willingness and ability to change. I use this and many such learnings in my everyday life and coaching conversations.

As introverted leaders, we often face a unique challenge: navigating the complex web of organizational politics without compromising our values or authenticity.

It can feel daunting to make our voices heard in spaces that favor extroversion or quick decision-making.

But the truth is, introverts have a powerful toolkit that can make us exceptionally skilled at influencing and leading in these environments.

Here are a few strategies to navigate organizational politics while staying true to who you are:

1. Leverage Your Listening Skills
Introverts are great listeners. Use this to your advantage by actively listening to understand various perspectives.

This not only helps you build strong relationships but also positions you as someone who is thoughtful and strategic , key traits when building influence.

2. Play the Long Game
Introverts often prefer to observe before acting. This can be an asset in organizational politics.

Instead of reacting quickly, take time to assess the situation, understand the dynamics, and align your actions with long-term goals.

3. Master One-on-One Influence
While large group settings may not always be your comfort zone, one-on-one conversations can be a powerful way for introverted leaders to influence others.

Whether it’s senior leadership or peers, personal interactions help you build trust and demonstrate your leadership capabilities without the noise of office politics.

4. Align Your Values with Organizational Goals
When your personal values align with your organization’s mission, it becomes easier to make decisions that feel authentic, even when facing political pressures.

Consistently demonstrating integrity will help you maintain trust and respect, no matter the political landscape.

5. Find Allies
You don't have to navigate politics alone. Build a support network of like-minded individuals who can provide guidance, share insights, and stand by you when needed.

These allies can also help amplify your voice when it’s time to make a stand.

Navigating office politics may never be easy, but as an introverted leader, you can use your natural strengths to lead with purpose, integrity, and influence.

It’s about working smarter, not louder.

End of Q1: Reflective Leadership Planning for Q2

As we close Q1, I find myself drawn to reflection rather than immediate planning.

For my fellow introvert leaders, here's the quiet planning ritual that's transformed my leadership effectiveness:

Leaders: How do you transition between quarters? Is your approach more reflective or action-oriented?

"You'd make an excellent leader if you'd just speak up more."

I still remember my first performance review as a new manager. Ten minutes of praise followed by those crushing words.

What followed? Three years of exhausting myself trying to be louder, more spontaneous, more "present" - all while my confidence silently crumbled.

For every introverted woman questioning her leadership style today: The world doesn't need you to be louder.

It needs you to be exactly who you are.

As an introvert leadership coach, RBG's legacy fascinates me: She didn't command rooms with charisma.

She commanded attention with carefully chosen words.

Next time someone tells you to "speak up more," remember: RBG whispered. And the world listened.

What change will your words create?

Meetings can be draining for introverts—not because they lack ideas, but because traditional formats often favor the loudest voices in the room.

Over the years, I’ve experimented with different meeting structures to create space where quiet contributors thrive, deep thinking is valued, and everyone feels heard.

Here are five structures that work wonders for introverted team members:

📝 1. Silent Brainstorming Sessions
Why it works: Instead of putting people on the spot, this structure allows team members to jot down their ideas first—on virtual whiteboards, shared docs, or sticky notes—before discussing them. This reduces pressure and encourages more thoughtful input.

🔄 2. Round-Robin Check-Ins

Why it works: Instead of open-ended “Anyone have thoughts?” (which introverts often hesitate to jump into), each person gets a turn to share. This ensures that everyone’s perspective is heard—without the need to compete for airtime.

⏳ 3. Asynchronous Collaboration Before the Meeting

Why it works: Sending agendas, discussion topics, or documents in advance gives introverts time to process, reflect, and contribute meaningfully. This leads to deeper insights rather than reactive responses.

🤝 4. Small Group Breakouts Before Large Discussions

Why it works: Introverts often feel more comfortable speaking in smaller groups. Giving them time to discuss ideas in pairs or small groups first helps them gain confidence before transitioning into the larger conversation.

🌿 5. “Think Breaks” Built into Meetings

Why it works: Instead of rapid-fire decision-making, inserting pauses for reflection (even just 2–3 minutes of quiet thinking) allows introverts to collect their thoughts before speaking—leading to stronger, more considered contributions.

When meetings honor different communication styles, everyone wins. What meeting structures have helped you or your team thrive? Let’s exchange ideas! 👇🏽

A quiet leader speaks thoughtfully. Someone else jumps in to "clarify" what they said.

Original message? Lost. Original intent? Buried.

Truth: When you rephrase a quiet leader's words, you're not helping. You're hijacking.
