Fort Caroline National Memorial, part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve located in Jacksonville, FL, recalls an original French settlement and fortification from 1564 created on the banks of the St. John’s River. The original fort’s construction was a response to it environmental context – earth from digging out a moat was used to create earthen walls.
In the 1960’s, when a Congressional Act created the park, a ‘replica’ exhibit was constructed along the river’s edge. Decades of changing climate patterns and accelerating storm damage has compromised the integrity of the original exhibit.
In creating a new memorial, our response relocates a memorial on higher ground and recalls the original fortifications footprint through a series of earthen walls and weathering steel interventions. At each of the triangular structure’s ‘points’ will be stations to observe the river and learn about the original fort’s location, construction, and history of occupation.
