🌾 HIGH PLAINS AG WEATHER UPDATE | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13

Kansas is facing a massive rainfall divide followed by the season’s first widespread frost.

A strong cold front is moving south today. Northern Kansas is already cooling, while southern counties get one final afternoon in the 80s.

🌧️ RAINFALL THROUGH THURSDAY

• Colby and Hays: 0.10–0.50 inch
• Garden City and Dodge City: 0.25–0.50 inch
• Salina through Wichita: 2–3 inches
• Topeka and Olathe: 2 to nearly 5 inches

🌾 A WIN FOR WINTER WHEAT

The quarter to one-half inch expected across northern, western and southwestern Kansas should provide nearly ideal topsoil moisture for newly drilled wheat and improve early emergence without causing major runoff.

🌽 A HARVEST STANDSTILL

Central and eastern Kansas could receive another 2–5 inches on already saturated ground. Deep mud, standing water and localized flooding could bring corn and soybean harvest activity to a complete stop.

🥶 FIRST WIDESPREAD FROST

Highs fall into the 60s Wednesday and the 50s Thursday. By Saturday morning, lows could reach the lower 30s, producing the first widespread frost of the season.

Please use caution on muddy rural roads and continue monitoring localized forecasts and radar.

🌾🌧️❄️ GREAT PLAINS AG WEATHER: MOISTURE AND FREEZE TIMING

Across the communities listed in our graphic, average first fall freeze dates range from September 30 to October 11. Atwood averages October 2, Colby October 5, and Goodland October 7.

We’re watching lows around 31°–32° Friday and Saturday nights, October 16–17. For locations still awaiting their first freeze, that would be later than the listed average date. Conditions will vary locally.

🌧️ Possible rainfall of ¼–½ inch Tuesday night through Thursday could help wheat germination and establishment but amounts and coverage may vary.

🚜 Wet soils could briefly delay wheat drilling and field access. Rain and damp conditions may also slow corn harvest and grain drying. Resume fieldwork as soils firms up.

The graphic also shows average frost-free season lengths across northwest Kansas, eastern Colorado, and southwest Nebraska.

🚜 FALL FIELDWORK WINDOW: KEEP MOVING—KEEP SAFETY CLOSE.

Harvesting corn, planting wheat or preparing hay? Warm, mainly dry weather continues through Monday across the Tri-State region.

Friday and Saturday bring gusts around 30–35 mph and low humidity, increasing the risk of a machinery spark becoming a field fire.

Before heading out:
✅ Clear crop residue from machinery.
✅ Check bearings and other hot components.
✅ Carry an accessible fire extinguisher.
✅ Avoid outdoor burning.

Sunday’s winds should ease to 5–10 mph during the afternoon or evening. That may offer a better spraying window—check local wind conditions and product-label requirements.

Shower chances begin Tuesday evening and continue Wednesday. Timing, coverage and amounts remain uncertain.

📍 Send us your location, field conditions and work plans so we can help tailor your forecast.

🌦️ A change is taking shape for next week.

Highs trend from the 70s into the 60s, with light showers possible as a western weather system approaches. A cold front is currently possible around Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning.

A faster front means earlier showers and cooling. A slower front keeps warmer weather around longer and delays the showers. Timing, coverage and rainfall amounts remain uncertain.

Use the dry weekend for fieldwork as conditions allow and share your plans so we can help you prepare.

👀🚜 WHAT TO WATCH | Wednesday, October 7

🌫️ FOG & DEW: Patchy fog could develop in southwestern portions of the Tri-State late tonight into Thursday morning. Check for damp vegetation before starting harvest.

🌾 FIELDWORK: Mostly dry weather through Saturday supports continued soil drying. Check firmness beneath the surface and crop moisture—wet low spots may need more time.

🔥 FIRE POTENTIAL: Friday–Saturday afternoons need watching near the Colorado border. Gusts near 30 mph and humidity possibly falling into the teens could increase fire danger.

🌧️ RAIN: Monday–Wednesday bring a 30–50% chance each day, along with cooler temperatures. Rain may be scattered and light; timing remains uncertain.

🚜🌾 Soil drying is underway—but check beneath the surface!

Sunshine, warmth and wind support continued surface drying this week. Wet low spots may take longer, and a dry-looking surface doesn’t guarantee firm soil below.

🌬️ Friday and Saturday: Winds of 15–25 mph, with gusts near 35.
🔥 Highest fire concern: Near the Colorado border and Tri-State junction, where humidity could fall into the teens Saturday.

Watch for ignition sources around dry vegetation and keep changing winds in mind during fieldwork.
