5 points to get you off to a good start...
1. Baby’s tummy is facing you
2. Baby’s ears, shoulders, and hips are in one line
3. Baby’s nose is off the breast, chin is in the breast
-> asymmetric latch
4. Baby’s lips are turned out (fish lips)
5. Bring baby to chest, not chest to baby.
Studies show, the more support a bodyfeeding parent has, the more likely they will do it over an extended period of time.
WHO recommends to bodyfeed for 2 years, after which time the baby’s immune system is fully developed.
Ask help from a postpartum doula who can help you initiate infant feeding.
If problems arise, defer to a lactation consultant.
Include your partner with this checklist. It gives them something to do to be involved, which leads to empowerment, and you might be too tired to remember all of this.
You are not supposed to do this on your own. Create the village that helps you raise your child.
