Practical vs. Tactical
This is a debate I often see among law enforcement officers. I believe the issue is less a debate and more a misunderstanding of the terms and how they complement each other.
Practical shooting
“How fast and accurately can you solve this shooting problem?”
Practical shooting develops the ability to process information quickly, manage stress, shoot fast while being accurate, and make decisions while performing a complex task. These skills can help build the mental speed and confidence needed when responding to dynamic situations.
Tactical shooting
“How do you safely handle a complex situation where shooting may or may not be required?”
Tactical decision-making requires judgment, awareness, communication, and understanding the totality of the situation. It is about determining the appropriate response, not simply executing a shooting solution.
The two are not competing concepts. Practical shooting helps develop the cognitive and performance skills that support tactical decision-making. Tactical training provides the framework for applying those skills appropriately in situations.
