Sharmalee Jones, MSG/MPA, CMC led an information session on Aging Resources with guest speaker Donna Kay Dinkins, Realtor, SRES. Other senior service providers including Oasis Senior Advisors Central Florida, Organized Haven, VISTE - Volunteers in Service to the Elderly, Sage Aging ElderCare Guide, Senior Helpers - Lakeland, FL and more presented resources they offer. Keep an eye out for future information sessions with Sharmalee Jones, owner of Sonshine Elder Advisors, LLC and Geriatric Care Manager.

Check out this informative presentation by Sonshine Elder Advisors, LLC ! The information session on aging resources will provide resources on a wide variety of topics that seniors and their families might need in making decisions. There will be information about determining need for help and types of help available, financial programs, driving and home safety, dementia, staying healthy, opportunities to volunteer or participate in research studies and other topics. Medicare Open Enrollment is Oct 15 through December 7, 2021. If you have questions about Medicare or want to change your current plan, be sure to look on the back of the Medicare & You 2021 Handbook for the local phone number for personalized counseling. The program is called SHINE in Florida and may be called SHIP in other states. Volunteers in Florida are trained by the Department of Elder Affairs to provide impartial help to clients. As SHINE counselors, we do not care what plan you choose - we just want to make sure you understand your options.

Protect seniors and vulnerable adults. Adult Protective Service programs vary between states. Contact your department of elder affairs for your state for information. In some states, all residents are mandatory reporters. APS programs typically investigate physical abuse, self-neglect, and financially exploitation. Some will investigate reports regardless of where the person resides, some will only investigate in the community. Individuals always have the right to refuse help, unless a court has determined they do not have capacity. This can be challenging for reporters and investigators. It is still important to report because help may be available that people are not aware of.
