The biggest problem with a volunteer department is not a lack of knowledge, a lack of training, or a lack of equipment. The biggest challenge we face is a race against the clock every time the pager goes off. There are times when we may have the whole department within a couple minutes of the firehouse but other times, our closest man might be ten minutes away. Due to the use of more and more synthetic materials in home furnishings, structure fires burn at an extremely accelerated rate compared to just a few decades ago. When every second counts, your local volunteer firefighters need as big of a head start as they can get and now there are companies out there to help with that. The link below is an example of a smoke detector/alarm system that can automatically call the fire department for you in the event of a fire within 60 seconds. This type of system gives us a big advantage compared to waiting for the homeowner or a passerby to make the 911 call.

The Augusta Fire Protection District is not affiliated with or promoting this company. This is just an example.

The video link below shows how much faster modern furnishings burn compared to older furnishings.
