On June 12, 2026, at 8:26 PM, the Aurelia Fire Department was dispatched to rural Aurelia for reports of cornstalk bales on fire and threatening a grain harvester and nearby cattle.
Upon arrival, firefighters quickly assessed the situation and determined that the grain harvester itself was actively involved in fire. Due to the size and complexity of the incident, mutual aid was requested from the Cherokee Fire Department.
As operations continued, gusty wind conditions contributed to the spread of the fire, prompting additional assistance from the Meriden, Cleghorn, and Alta Fire Departments. Fire crews worked together for several hours to contain and extinguish the fire while protecting nearby property and livestock.
Cherokee Fire Department utilized their aerial apparatus to gain access to the grain bin and begin cooling operations. Through the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies, the fire was successfully brought under control. Crews remained on scene until approximately 1:00 AM.
The Aurelia Fire Department would like to thank the Cherokee, Meriden, Cleghorn, and Alta Fire Departments for their quick response and assistance. We also extend our appreciation to Cherokee Regional Medical Center EMS and the Cherokee County 911 Center for their support throughout the entire incident.
No injuries to emergency personnel or livestock were reported.
