By way of example, an issue AmAudit championed was local taxation of energy and cable. Prior to AmAudit's pursuit of accuracy in energy tax collections, Illinois public utilities were virtually unchecked as to the accuracy and the quality of collections. (see www.amaudit.net).
AmAudit approached Senator Pam Althoff regarding this matter. The Senator saw merit in what we had uncovered and proposed it be legislated.
In the meantime, AmAudit was asked to draft an outline of a what would be needed to audit tax collections. AmAudit sat in on working groups with utilities in hopes of finding compromises. After 4 long years and intense negotiation with the utilities, Governor Quinn signed into law Public Act 96-1422 which gave local governments the ability to audit energy and cable tax collections.
This effort by AmAudit and the public utilities has cleared up over 90% of the collections errors by our estimation since becoming law in 2010. Today local governments are receiving their correct tax levies on energy and cable.
