When we activate the productive parts of our brain, for example the right side of our prefrontal cortex (PFC), which is responsible for higher order thinking, we increase well-being through feelings of satisfaction and effectiveness thus increasing work performance, we become more engaged in what’s important to us, we become more self-aware, mentally flexible, self-controlled, and we show up confident, recovered, composed, and focused.

When we over activate the less productive parts of our brain such as the left side of our PFC we become more susceptible to unhealthy mental states and stress injuries such as unhealthy coping, burnout, posttraumatic stress, anxiety, depression, and increased potential for su***de. The path to these unhealthy states is revealed through performance breakdowns such as loss of concentration, poor decisions, poor sleep, excessive hyper-vigilance, over-reactivity, etc.

How do we do this? Through implementing tools and concepts such as connecting to values and setting goals, applying a growth mindset approach to personal and professional life, applying effective stress management tools to stay in your optimal zone of natural excellence (OZONE), communicating intentionally within our interactions on and off the job, and maintaining optimal motivation throughout. These concepts tap into the reward centers within the brain which sets us up to sustain a ready and resilient posture allowing us to lead our environment rather than our chaotic environment leading us.

STRESS your resilience.

Regroup and Refocus on growing, learning, and improving. When you are growing and learning, it is highly unlikely to burn out from the negative effects of stress. Growth from stress is possible. This is the essence of taking a growth mindset approach to your life. Within regrouping and refocusing, we are taking time to ask ourselves: what and who else can I connect and engage with to take that next step to being better and not giving up (fixed mindset)? How and where can I implement rest and relaxation for better recovery? Am I seeking to escape (unhealthy) from stress or relax (healthy) so that I can adequately recover in preparation to perform again?

Growing and learning is associated with the parasympathetic branch (responsible for recovery) of our autonomic nervous system, similarly to connecting and engaging. This is where the regrouping happens which then allows us to refocus on what matters. With a new focus, we increase our flexibility to cope adaptively with the stressors we face and view these stressors more objectively. This is especially critical when we consider concepts like post-traumatic growth in high stress / high stakes professions where lives are on the line. When the stress piles up, take time to regroup and refocus and connect to what matters. This helps to eliminate distress and prepares us for consistently optimal performance as a responder, service-member, spouse, parent, etc. Tune-in to how you regroup and refocus.

It is imperative that we continually tune-in to our physical/physiological state as we experience stress. Stress is an inevitable part of life and it has a significant impact on the physiological processes (release of stress hormones) that put us into a sympathetic, ready-to-respond state. As a result of staying in a “fight or flight,” sympathetic state within a sedentary lifestyle, our bodies end up not utilizing the stress hormones through movement and these hormones remain in our body too long.

By regularly exercising, and refueling properly through adequate nutrition, we “process” these hormones in the way our bodies were used to for thousands of years and we mitigate the negative effects of stress. Consistent and regular exercise also releases endorphins that help cope with stress and boost dopamine levels that create a positive attitude and happy feeling. This has been shown to increase confidence, improve mood, help relax, and improve quality of sleep. These are all elements necessary for consistently optimal performance in stressful situations.

Another key component of switching off autopilot living is tuning into how you are contributing to creating a sense of belonging. This sense of belonging is an outcome of engaging appropriately to better manage stress collectively. Founded on the three concepts of safety (trust), vulnerability (shared risk), and purpose (shared story); a strong sense of belonging helps to increase our perceptions of social support and solidarity in high stress situations. In STRESSing our resilience, it is not only important to evaluate how we are contributing to creating a sense of belonging within our organization and families, but also how we are responding to the sense of belonging that exists.

Engaging with others also allows us to better manage our own response to various stressors in our lives by compelling us to see things from a different perspective. Why? Connecting and engaging taps into the parasympathetic system of our autonomic nervous system. More specifically the ventral vagus nerve. This is the same area that is activated when we are infants as we connect with caregivers and experience feelings of comfort and support. As we go through life and experience stressors we engage this area less and less and tend to carry more of the stress load on ourselves. As stress piles up, ensure you are engaging with others in a way that allows you to experience these similar feelings from your childhood.

A key component of switching off auto-pilot living entails tuning-in to what matters and clarifying your WHY. This is critical to keeping you on track when the stress of the profession or life throws you off. As we experience distress, we begin to lose sight of why we do what we do. This impacts how we respond to stressful situations, how we recover from day to day, our mindset, our motivation, and how we interact with others. As a result, we switch to auto-pilot living because we are not tuned-in to what drives us continuously. When we tune-out, we end up unconsciously allowing our environment to lead us, hoping for the best along the way, and from that we become more susceptible to stress related injuries due to no longer perceiving control.
Strengthening your WHY begins with identifying your core values. Values help clarify your ultimate purpose and increase your perceptions of control within your environment. Tuning-in to your values provides direction and promotes optimal motivation. Solid values push you to leave your comfort zone as you strive for progress which oftentimes requires taking risks and learning from mistakes. This ultimately leads you towards appropriately facing and overcoming challenges. In the toughest and most chaotic of times, values, when followed by action, lead to personal meaning, individual growth, and fulfillment.
When we are clear and concrete on our values, we contribute to increasing our self-worth as we develop our personal philosophy in relation to the world based on our authentic, meaningful visions of who we want to be. That said, tune-in to what matters to you. It’s the starting point to prepare you to face life’s challenges.

Are you on “auto-pilot,” just doing what you’ve done for most of your life both personally and professionally? You probably are and don’t even know it! I see this often in today’s environment and in my work with various first responders. I know I lived like this while I was in the Army, “just get through today, and do it all again tomorrow.” A good majority of us operate on auto-pilot everyday, not really tuning in to how we are living and showing up in our environment. At one point we wanted to be a better version of ourselves. At one point we knew what was important to us, but never checked in to see if that changed. At one point we set goals, but lost sight of those and never achieved them because life happened. The fact is, auto-pilot really only works for airplanes and Tesla vehicles.

When we finally “find time” to tune in, we realize we aren’t exactly where we want to be. Something is misaligned, but we don’t know what. That’s because we haven’t been adequately tuning in along the way. What happens, then, is that our environment (thoughts, emotions, high-stress events, etc.) leads us, instead of us leading it. This is where we find frustration, exhaustion, high stress, degraded performance, etc. This couldn’t be more dangerous than in high stress environments when we need to be adequately tuned in because lives depend on it. Let’s start the process of tuning in by first acknowledging and becoming aware that we are tuned out! Stay tuned, more to follow!

To those I’ve lost along the way, this day is for you and remembrance of your ultimate sacrifice; of your steadfastness and loyalty to a cause much greater than yourself. In honor of the heroes who retuned having given their lives for their nation, remember them today as you enjoy a day of freedom and camaraderie. May it be said well done, be thou at peace warriors.

The advantage of an international consulting team is that you can make an impact internationally. Last Sunday, Barbora chatted with Tomas Cap, First Lieutenant/Paramedic HS6 Ostrava, founder of the largest community of Czech firefighters about implementation of mental skills training into a firefighters prep.

Barbora and Tomas discussed the tunnel vision and how it occurs in the heat of the moment as well as the ability to adjust firefighter’s mental and physiological activation during the call to reach their Optimal Zone of Natural Excellence and maximize performance.

If you missed the conversation on Clubhouse, you will be able to learn some Czech with Barbora in the future! More talks and collab with to follow!

Thank you, Tomas, for this opportunity!

This quote by Robin Sharma, one of the top 5 leadership experts in the world, sums up much of what we look to instill within this community. Imagine if more people thought of themselves as leaders in their respective areas of influence. Imagine if leaders understood the impact of their influence on others and used it to facilitate environments of growth, support, commitment, and stability. Someone less susceptible to burnout is a more effective leader. Someone more ready to face life’s challenges is a more effective leader. Someone who is resilient is a more effective leader. The great thing is, ANYONE can be a leader, whether it's by position or because YOU decided to be the catalyst for positive change in your role as a parent, a colleague, a subordinate, a spouse, etc.

Much adversity is seen in today’s world and adversity can also be seen in any part of your life that troubles you either personally or professionally. Leaders have never been needed more than they are at times like these. From my military background, leadership is one of my (Brian’s) favorite areas of focus and because of that, we believe in strengthening a community of leaders.

We want to help you be the leader you envision. Are you in a position of leadership or consider yourself a leader, but feel your effectiveness is not where it should be due to various reasons or obstacles? Let’s talk and dig within to find out how you can optimize your leadership abilities. Sign up for a FREE 30-minute CONSULTATION where we
