Text Spam on the Rise - Increasing SMS spam is likely the result of more people using "email-to-sms" gateways. Available to anyone with an email account, this is a "back door" technique for sending unsolicited SMS messages. Although highly unreliable in terms of deliverability, there are LOTS of people using it, primarily because it's free. What they should be recognizing is that it's also free of any results!
The Mobile Marketing Association's guidelines are there for a reason. Yes, it's certainly targeted to the prevention of text spam, but the best practices the MMA espouses, MOST importantly, are based on the concept of choice, which is the ONLY way mobile marketing can work effectively for a business. There is still a lot of education on commercial SMS that needs to be shared with businesses. With the price of short code SMS programs continuing to drop, the choice between paying and getting it for free is moot. It's results that count.
