A big shoutout to American Subcontractors Association - North Texas Chapter and TCA member Rusty Vaughn of Texas AirSystems for his efforts in bringing the Be Pro Be Proud (BPBP) Mobile Workshop to North Texas! 👏

Rusty first experienced the Mobile Workshop in Arkansas back in 2022 and was so impressed by what he saw that he teamed up with fellow industry leaders and advocates to help bring one to Texas. Now, that vision is becoming a reality! 🚚

With a soft launch underway and a full rollout planned for 2027, the first Mobile Workshop will serve North Texas, giving thousands of students and educators an exciting, hands-on introduction to careers in the skilled trades. Through virtual reality simulators, students can experience what it's like to operate cranes, heavy equipment, and other tools used in the trades, all while exploring potential career opportunities.

And the plans don't stop there! Supporters are working with state lawmakers ahead of the 2027 Texas Legislative Session to pursue state funding and establish a public-private partnership that could bring additional Mobile Workshops to cities across Texas. A core group of legislators are already on board with the effort.

With support from sponsors such as Meta, Procore Technologies, Dallas College, Fishback Family Foundation, Vaughn Family Foundation, and TEXO, The Construction Association, Be Pro Be Proud is helping introduce the next generation to the many career paths available in construction and other skilled trades.

This month, we’re proud to spotlight Lee Aitken of Holes Inc, who has spent more than 35 years building a career in construction and giving back to the industry along the way. 🌟

Lee joined Holes Incorporated in 1989 as a Senior Operator/Trainer and worked his way through the company, moving into estimating and project management before becoming Vice President of Sales in 2022. He also holds numerous industry certifications and shares his experience as a Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association Certified Operator and Estimating Course Instructor.

Outside of his work at Holes, Lee has been a familiar face at American Subcontractors Association - Houston Chapter (ASA-HC) for years. He has served on the Board of Directors since 2005 and has been involved with everything from the Fishing and Golf Tournaments to Finance and the Excellence in Construction Awards. As Chapter President from 2023 to 2025, Lee helped grow membership, increase participation, expand the GC Partners Program, and find new ways to recognize and engage volunteers. His leadership was recognized nationally when he received the President of the Year Award at the ASA National Conference. 🏆

And construction runs in the Aitken family. Lee’s sons, Branden and Mitchell, are both Texas A&M Construction Science graduates working in the industry, and his daughter, Jenna, is pursuing Construction Management at Sam Houston State University.

Congratulations to Lee on all he has accomplished and, especially, the time and effort he continues to give back to the construction community. We’re proud to have Lee as part of the TCA network! 👏

What if AI could help connect more people with careers in the skilled trades while helping employers find the workers they need? 🤖

That’s the conversation in this month’s TCA podcast. Bryan Hadley sat down with Rafael “Rafa” Alvarez, Senior Vice President of Regional Workforce Development at the Greater Houston Partnership, to talk about Ready Set Next and how AI could play a role in addressing workforce challenges.

Rafa brings years of experience in workforce development to the conversation. He leads the Partnership’s UpSkill Houston initiative and previously founded Genesys Works, a nonprofit focused on creating career pathways for students through internships and corporate training.

During the conversation, Rafa shared some eye-opening numbers. About 90,000 students graduate from Greater Houston public schools each year, yet only about 20% are earning a livable wage six years later. At the same time, he noted roughly 130,000 job openings across the region and billions of dollars in construction backlog, with employers struggling to find enough people to do the work.

That’s where Ready Set Next comes in. Its AI chatbot, Argo, gets to know each person through conversation, learning about their interests, experiences, and goals and helping them uncover strengths and career possibilities they may not have considered before.

There’s a lot to unpack when it comes to AI and the workforce, and this conversation offers an interesting look at how the technology could help connect more people with opportunities in the skilled trades. 🏗️

American Subcontractors Association of Austin, Texas gets into the Halloween spirit with its Pickleball Tournament on October 27 at The Picklr – Austin West. Come ready for some friendly competition, networking, and costumes. 🎃

American Subcontractors Association - Houston Chapter (ASA-HC) hosts its General Lunch Meeting on October 15 featuring ASA National’s Mike Oscar, who will share an update on legislative and policy issues affecting subcontractors. Then on October 22, members can Schmooze & Mingle with GC Partner Vaughn Construction.

American Subcontractors Association - North Texas Chapter kicks off with its Fall Golf Tournament on October 6 at Cowboys Golf Club, followed by a Texas Lien & Bond Claim Seminar on October 20 at CEF.

American Subcontractors Association - North Texas Chapter hosts its YPG Driving Range Mixer on October 6 at San Pedro Par 3, followed by the October General Meeting on October 13 at the Petroleum Club of San Antonio featuring The State of San Antonio: Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

Central Texas Subcontractors Association and Subcontractors Association of the Metroplex are teaming up for the Annual Clay Shoot on October 14 at Elm Fork Shooting Sports in Dallas.

DFW Drywall and Acoustical Contractors Association of Austin is celebrating 10 years! Its Golf Classic takes place October 7 at Star Ranch. ⛳

Houston Area Glass Association (HAGA) closes out October with a Costume Contest and Happy Hour on October 29 at Kirby Ice House Memorial.

Painting Contractors Association - PCA DFW heads to Lake Texoma for its 2026 Striper Fishing Tournament on October 23.

Subcontractors Association of the Metroplex (SAM) is also hosting SAM University: Sales & Communication on October 7 at IEC Dallas – Irving, focusing on marketing, sales, and soft skills.

And Texas Lathing and Plastering Contractors Association (TLPCA) brings members together for its 2nd Annual Topgolf Event on October 22 at Topgolf The Colony.
