How are you finding space to grieve, engage, and push against the racial violence of last week? Depending on how these horrific incidents impacted you, how are you caring for others and for yourself? How are you educating your young ones? Buffalo, Laguna Woods, and Dallas are stark reminders that things are not okay. No matter how difficult, we need to press forward for change in our lives and in our communities. Remaining where we are can no longer be an option. We’ve lost too much already.

On , we’re reminded that we still need to carry the legacy of MLK forward into our broken world.

“It may well be that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition is not the glaring noisiness of the so-called bad people, but the applying silence of the so-called good people.” - MLK Jr, The Current Crisis in Race Relations

Restrictive voting policies, killing people of color, and violence against marginalized communities are not just things of the past. They are issues of yesterday finding fresh expression today. (Voting Rights, Michelle Alyssa Go, Beth Israel Congregation) Let’s get to work. May just roll on like a river...

As we head into the new year, keep up the same energy for justice and peacemaking. Transformative allies intentionally and consistently commit to doing the work, year in and year out.

As you do the work, here are some red flags to be mindful of and some paradigms & questions to help you grow deeper.

“My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.”

One of the greatest leaders of our generation, Rev. Desmond Tutu passed away yesterday. His work and heart for liberation and reconciliation is a foundation of all the work we do at JustPax. Our hearts ache as our hero has gone home, but his memory lives on in us.

We hold this day with tension. We exercise gratitude and nurture connection, but we also mourn the history of this day, this place, and its people. It’s in living in this tension that we begin to undo the narratives that were fed to us and live into true liberation.

Client Experience Spotlight: We love working with organizational leaders. Check out what Eric Bryant of had to say about their experience -

“The team with JustPax led our entire staff through a training that better equipped us to serve more effectively in our increasingly diverse city. Every church needs to know how to love, serve, and reach our multi-ethnic communities. JustPax is a great resource!”

Today, we honor and celebrate veterans all across the country by commemorating a holiday dating back over 100 years after an agreement was signed to end World War I hostilities. We appreciate the unselfish acts of courage and bravery that the men and women who make up the U.S. military continue to exude on behalf of the United States and her citizens.

Today, we especially want to elevate BIPOC who have served through the years. Black and brown soldiers have served our country faithfully, but their stories often go unseen and unheard. This image depicts African American WWI soldiers upon returning from war (pc: Bettman/Getty images) who represent a huge contingency of soldiers, fighting on behalf of the US in every war since the American Revolution.

On Nov. 1, based on reasonable doubt in the conviction of Julius Jones for the killing of Paul Howell, Oklahoma's Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-1 to recommend clemency for Julius Jones, who is scheduled for ex*****on on Nov. 18, 2021. The hearing and the recommendation both marked historic firsts for the State of Oklahoma; no prior death row inmate has ever appeared before the Board. Together with other civic and faith leaders, we now call upon Gov. Kevin Stitt to commute Mr. Jones' death sentence. We do so because we believe all life is sacred, and we strive for justice that is true and restorative. We also lift up both the Jones and the Howell families during these uncertain times, recognizing the pain and loss they each have faced.

November is ! Here's a list of Native American bookstores, as well as a wider list of Indigenous-owned bookstores in the USA and Canada.

Each time we circulate this list we discover more bookstores to add to it, so here's hoping we find a few more. Comment with anyone we missed!

Link in bio for all their websites and Libro.fm storefronts (if available).

P.S. Shoutout to , a leading North American publisher of Indigenous voices and the oldest indigenous publishing house in Canada.

At JustPax Collective, one of our core practices is Peacemaking. Peacemaking is worlds apart from peacekeeping, which often leads to a cheap, false version of unity. Peacemaking requires difficult conversations and unsettling truths, and it can only be forged through relationships built on trust. In our work, we reject false unity and pursue a true peace in which all can flourish. To that end, we aren’t afraid to (respectfully) rock the boat a bit as we work together to heal divisions. If you’re looking to engage the work of restorative justice, we’d love to connect!

-How do you pursue peacemaking in your life?
- In what areas do you sometimes opt for peacekeeping, and why? What would it look like to choose peacemaking instead?
