While doing a deer survey this morning, we came across this alligator eating a carp. The interesting thing, as you can see, is that 4-5 soft shell turtles were bothering him. One was trying to eat the carp while the others picked at him. Eventually, he left the carp on the shore, got back in the water & started biting at the turtles. While he was swimming after one, the others were nipping at his back half.
One of the stranger wildlife encounters I’ve come across in a while.

Those that fly surveys with me know I like the unique & less often seen wildlife. The badger has to be my favorites!

It’s interesting that young male Axis grow a small rack in the first eight months of their life like most deer. But the antlers don’t break through the skin until it’s 2 to 3 inches off their head. The covering on the first few inches is actually fur, not velvet. You can see Frito’s spots on his antlers, just like the spots on the rest of his body.
I’m hoping that he breaks through and starts producing velvet within the next few weeks .

In 34 years of doing helicopter surveys, I’ve seen some interinteresting things. But I’ve never seen an Indigo snake hanging out by a pond.
Note: The Texas Indigo snake is listed as a Threatened species. Great to see them when we do. Also, they eat rattlesnakes!

After 2 weeks of moving stocker bucks almost every night, we rolled right into survey season. In the helicopter every day this week. Cool pics to follow.
For all you helicopter pilots out there, Phillip obviously knew he was being filmed & stuck that landing on the trailer effortlessly!
