It’s interesting that young male Axis grow a small rack in the first eight months of their life like most deer. But the antlers don’t break through the skin until it’s 2 to 3 inches off their head. The covering on the first few inches is actually fur, not velvet. You can see Frito’s spots on his antlers, just like the spots on the rest of his body.
I’m hoping that he breaks through and starts producing velvet within the next few weeks .

In 34 years of doing helicopter surveys, I’ve seen some interinteresting things. But I’ve never seen an Indigo snake hanging out by a pond.
Note: The Texas Indigo snake is listed as a Threatened species. Great to see them when we do. Also, they eat rattlesnakes!

A tremendous amount of antler on the trailer in the past few weeks.
Many thanks to High Roller Whitetails, Republic of Texas Whitetails, & Diamond A Whitetails for your trust & business.
Time to get in the helicopter for surveys!

Best part of this video is how green it is for late summer!
