Austin’s rapid growth is outpacing its public safety resources, warns Jennifer Stevens, Board President of the Central Texas Public Safety Commission, in her new op-ed for the Austin American-Statesman.

Despite some recruiting gains, the Austin Police Department remains hundreds of officers short, Austin-Travis County EMS is significantly understaffed with high early turnover, and the Austin Fire Department continues to see declining applicant numbers — all while the city booms.

The consequences are real: businesses closing due to crime, fewer tourists downtown, and an eroding quality of life.

Stevens calls for stronger investment in recruitment, retention, training, and competitive pay — backed by full community and political support for our first responders.
