How I Build Authentic Connections with U.S. Hispanics

Real connection starts with respect, cultural awareness, and Simpatía — the emotional warmth and friendliness at the heart of Latino culture. ❤️

When researchers listen deeply and let participants express themselves without pressuring them to act "American", they open the door to real stories and insights.

Because when Hispanics feel safe to be their true bicultural selves, brands uncover authentic, resonant insights — not filtered responses.

Let’s look at two ads featuring Latinos:
✅ Coca-Cola’s ad showing a Mexican mom singing to her baby celebrated love and family.
❌ A cereal ad showing a grandmother hoarding food missed the mark on generosity — a core Hispanic value.

Many times research clients are surprised about how quickly I develop relationships with participants during individual and group interviews. Participants feel very comfortable to be themselves and share their truths.

As a marketing researcher, I have learned to develop quick relationships with participants. This is what I do:

1) Listen from the heart, build acceptance. “Be yourself, tell me what you believe” Listen to others and allow them to reveal facts about themselves and their opinions. I particularly pay attention to their opinions through the adjectives they use. Our opinions say something about how we have responded to the facts of our lives. I believe that every person is a product of their experiences. Therefore if I am tempted to judge anybody, I just remind myself that if I had this person’s life experiences, I would probably say something similar. This keeps me focused on accepting others even if I do not agree with them. We all thrive when we feel accepted. During the interviews, I speak politely and gently to encourage others to share their opinions in the same way.

2) Listen to their dreams and hopes. “Your dreams are important to me” Our dreams are the vision to our lives. We share our dreams with people we feel accepted by, because our dreams reveal who we are. During introductory exercises, I ask participants to share their dreams. This ignites their participation and facilitates a deeper relationship among them. Often, during breaks I see participants talking to the ones that share a common purpose or dream with them (raising their kids well, making their business work, achieving life balance). They start to form one on one relationships.

3) Listen to their feelings and faults. “I am afraid and acknowledge my mistakes” The disclosure of our feelings reveals our humanity and makes us vulnerable. We reveal our needs to be listened to, to be loved, to be respected, and valued. But this requires courage. During interviews, I take that risk and make myself vulnerable so participants will as well. For example, if we are talking about healthcare, I share an illness that I have had and what I am afraid of. Also, when participants tell me they do not understand my instruction, I recognize this and thank them for pointing that out. This helps me to connect with them on a deeper level.
The ability to accept each other’s fears and faults reflects great maturity and uplifts our relationships. We learn that we are not alone in our journeys.

I encourage you to implement these ideas in your next encounter with participants, family and friends. The key is to strive to listen until you know how people feel and why they are feeling that way. You may discover an emotional need that they are not aware of, and help them fulfill that emotional need, a true sign of a loving relationship.

Have you ever felt like you're talking, but nobody is listening? In a world where genuine dialogue is becoming rare, marketers struggle to capture attention and engage in meaningful conversations with customers.

At COMARKA, we excel in creating authentic dialogues between clients and customers in qualitative research. Here are 3 key strategies we use:

1) Build acceptance to promote authenticity: “Be yourself, you matter to me!” During groups, we nurture acceptance via non-verbal cues, and invite divergent views from group members. It also connects with clients who say, “I like these people. They think differently. Tell me more. AHA!”

2) Create mutual emotional meaning: “What do you mean by ‘X’?” Emotions drive behavior, and we make sure to understand the emotional nuances behind words. Through indirect questioning and gentle probing, we help participants articulate their emotional responses, enhancing communication effectiveness.

3) Promote collaboration: “I am here to help you!” In groups, we build ideation exercises that foster camaraderie and collaboration among the participants. Clients watch participants enthusiastically work in teams to help the brand become more successful.

As Reuel Howe says, "Dialogue is the only way of knowing the other person, and through this to serving this person and finding our own being."

Thank you to Comarka Consulting & Research's research friends and colleagues for the vigorous and stimulating conversation after her presentation: Unveiling the Truths of Latino Customers. Your super smart questions and reactions made our day!

One attendee highlighted her presentation as being more informative than any other she had seen that day, saying that she provided guidelines that attendees could use in their work. Another colleague asked why people of color's representation in the US population (38%) isn't discussed more often and thanked her for creating awareness.
