From fossil to playground!

What happens when local history becomes part of the play?

RVi’s Southeast Metropolitan Park All-Abilities Playground is featured in the September issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News. Inspired by a nearly complete mosasaur skeleton discovered in Central Texas, the RVi project team, led by Andrew Howard, worked with Travis County Parks Foundation and GameTime to transform that story into an immersive, inclusive play experience.

Kids can climb through the mosasaur’s rib cage, scramble across its flippers, and even slide through its open jaws—all while discovering a piece of prehistoric history tied directly to the place they call home.

The playground was also recognized with a 2024 Texas Recreation and Park Society Park Design Excellence Award, celebrating its creative approach to inclusive play and place-based design.

We love seeing this one-of-a-kind play experience featured in LASN and sharing the local history that inspired it.

RVi is saddened to share the passing of Barbara Austin, PLA, a former Principal whose leadership, talent, and dedication left a lasting mark on our firm and the landscape architecture profession.

During her years with RVi, Barbara was especially passionate about public work; parks, recreation, and open spaces that strengthen communities and improve everyday life. She was also a mentor, colleague, and friend whose influence can still be felt in the people she worked alongside and the places she helped shape.

Barbara believed deeply in the value of landscape architecture and in giving back to her profession and community. In her memory, RVi is exploring ways to support the Austin Parks Foundation in Barbara’s honor, recognizing her service on its board and her lifelong commitment to parks and public spaces.

Our thoughts are with Barbara’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.

We will remember Barbara with gratitude and celebrate the lasting impact she made on RVi and the Austin community.

Help shape the future of two Travis County parks!

RVi is working with Travis County on vision plans for Reimers Ranch Park and RGK Ranch Park, and we want to hear from you!

Join us at the Open House on October 7 to explore early ideas, meet the project team, and share your inHelp shape the future of two Travis County parks!

RVi is working with Travis County on vision planning for Reimers Ranch Park and its newest park, RGK Ranch Park, which is not yet open to the public. As part of the planning and community engagement process, we want to hear from the people who will experience these parks for years to come.

Join the project team at the Open House at Lake Travis Middle School on Bee Creek Rd, this Wednesday at 5PM, October 7, to explore early ideas for the parks, learn more about the vision planning process, and share your input.

An online survey will be open October 7–November 4 to supplement public input with questions to get your feedback!

What makes resort-style living feel like a true neighborhood?

Working with Forestar Forestar Group, RVi helped shape Star Farms at Lakewood Ranch around a connected network of amenities, trails, greenways, and natural features designed to bring people together. From resort-style recreation to preserved live oaks and outdoor spaces, the community offers plenty of ways to get outside, stay active, and connect.

The success of Star Farms also led Forestar to expand east with Saddlestone at Star Farms, adding more shared amenities and extending the trail network.

Buena Vista Ranch is officially rezoned in the City of Surprise!

Proud to share that the Surprise City Council has approved the rezoning for Buena Vista Ranch, a 422-acre mixed-use community is planned to include a variety of housing types, employment uses, parks, open space, a future K-8 school site, and an interconnected trail system with regional connections.

RVi led the land planning and zoning entitlement work in collaboration with GilbertBlilie (attorney), Wood Patel (civil engineering) and United Civil Group (traffic engineering). Great teamwork getting this one across the finish line for Buena Vista Holdings, LLC!

We’re thrilled to announce that the Golden Triangle Regional Park Master Plan in Tavares, Florida received unanimous 5-0 approval from Tavares City Council for plan adoption and to move forward into implementation phases!

Shaped by community input and designed by RVi, the plan creates one connected regional park system across two complementary campuses—an East Campus focused on social programming, nature, and wellness, and a West Campus centered on organized sports and active recreation.

We’re excited to see this community-driven vision take its next step and look forward to what’s ahead for Golden Triangle Regional Park!

Last week, members of RVi’s Naperville team toured the newly opened EMG Children's Garden. https://bit.ly/4mYRIYc.

It was special to experience this project firsthand, and while the team admired the custom-designed Luckey Climber (pictured), they wisely left the actual climbing to the children. The garden is a beautiful example of design that sparks curiosity and teaches the next generation about nature and stewardship. Inspiring stuff!

We’re proud of the work our team contributed to this special project and grateful to the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance and Chicago Park District for helping bring this meaningful space to life.

That’s a wrap at the Florida Recreation and Park Association, Inc. Annual Conference!

Our team had a great time in Orlando connecting with so many colleagues, catching up with familiar faces, and talking about the parks and recreation spaces that help Florida communities thrive.
