Happy Wildflower Week! Thursday’s flower is Monarda citriodora, otherwise known as purple horsemint or lemon beebalm. This unique looking flower is beloved by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

This plant is widespread across much of North America, from Michoacán to Nebraska and Arizona to Florida.

When rubbed or crushed, the leaves of this plant release a citrusy, herbal fragrance. These leaves have a variety of culinary and medicinal applications, and teas brewed with them not only have a pleasant taste, but have been used as remedies for coughs and colds. In addition, the leaves contain citronellol, which can be used to deter insects when used topically.

Happy Wildflower Week! Our wildflower of the day is Phlox drummondii, or annual phlox. Annual phlox are native to Texas and much of the southeastern United States. These bright, showy blooms usually appear around the same time as bluebonnets in March, and last through June.

Imported to Europe by botanist Thomas Drummond in 1835, this flower quickly grew to become a favorite of gardeners all over the world. The flowers range in color from pink to red, white, peach, or lavender, and attract butterflies.

It’s the first day of National Wildflower Week!
Our flower of the day is Argemone albiflora, commonly known as the Texas prickly poppy or the bluestem prickly poppy.

This lovely annual or biennial flower can be found from east Texas to northern Arkansas and southern Missouri, and in parts of Southern California’s high desert.

Native American peoples, including the Shoshone, Paiute, and Comanche, used many parts of the prickly poppy for external medicinal purposes. Seeds would be crushed to make salves for wounds, the roots could be heated and used for toothaches, and the yellow latex was also used to treat a variety of skin and eye problems.

During WWII, the seeds, which have a very high oil content, were even used to produce an alternative fine lubricant.

Many animals avoid consuming this plant, as parts of it are toxic, but the seeds are valued by quails and doves, and bees are drawn to the flowers.
