The Ripple Effect Inc. Changing the way the world works through the power of CONNECTION

09/04/2026

There's a moment in this episode where Maria Gatling is talking about the Ripple Effect and she describes what happens after one of her workshops so perfectly that I had to stop and just let it land.

A student comes back a month later and tells her the class helped them find something they didn't know they had. And then mentions their kids have started doing it too.

That's it. That's the whole thing. That's a Ripple.

Maria doesn't just teach creativity. She starts something in people that they carry home and pass on without even thinking about it. One workshop, one class, one nudge in the right direction, and suddenly the people around that person are catching something they didn't even know they needed.

That is what this podcast is built around. And seeing it in Maria's work is one of the reasons I love having her in this community.

Most creatives never start because they're waiting until it's good enough for someone else to see. It doesn't have to be.

Every creative practice looks a little different, and Maria Gatling's happens to start with a notebook. What she recommends to anyone who wants to start but has no idea where to begin is something I think every person who has ever talked themselves out of being creative really needs to hear.

This episode is also a first for The Ripple Effect Podcast. Maria is the first guest I've ever had sitting right here in my studio.

My friend Maria Gatling picked up photography as one of her creative outlets, and lucky for me, I got to be her subject when we met up for a coffee and a creative catch-up.

The next few shots are from some of her art workshops and honestly they speak for themselves.

Oh, and one more thing. Did I mention our podcast episode is out? Maria is my first ever in-studio guest on The Ripple Effect Podcast. No Zoom. No screens. Just two friends sitting at the same table finally having the conversation we've been meaning to have for a long time. It's out now on YouTube and all major podcast platforms.

Today is August 29th.

I've been sitting with what Sandy Rosenthal shared with me yesterday on our Substack Live, and I haven't been able to shake it.

She wasn't reciting history. She was just telling the truth about what this day means to the people she loves and the city she has spent twenty-one years fighting for. And somewhere in the middle of it, without warning, she said a name.

That's when I felt it.

To the people of New Orleans, we see you. We remember with you.

And to Sandy Rosenthal, we are grateful for your voice.

We spend so much time trying to measure people. Score them, rank them, or fit them into a system that was never built for them in the first place.

And the leaders who figure out how to stop doing that and actually work with the mess? They're the ones who win.

Companies spend enormous time and money trying to figure out why they can't hold onto their best people.

Joe Fusco has a pretty direct answer.

Most people don't leave because the pay is bad or the commute is long. They leave because at some point, they stopped feeling like what they were doing actually mattered.

Joe's point is that the drive to matter isn't a nice-to-have. It's one of the strongest human drives there is. And when leaders understand that, when they take it seriously enough to explain clearly and honestly why every person's contribution counts, something happens. People stop just showing up and start actually caring.

Half of that is on the person doing the work. The other half is entirely on the leader.

Hey, Ripplers!

Tomorrow morning, Sandy Rosenthal and I are going live on Substack.

The timing is everything. August 29th is the 21st anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The day before it, we're sitting down to talk about what the public didn't see on the news, what happens when a government doesn't have a plan, whether this was a preventable catastrophe, and why persistence beats power almost every single time

This isn't just about New Orleans. It's about what happens when the systems meant to protect us fail and nobody is held responsible. Then what we can do to prevent it from happening again.

You're invited: Friday, August 28th. 11 AM CT. Free on Substack.

Joe Fusco said this and we both kind of laughed. And then we sat with it for a second and realized it was actually the smartest competitive strategy we'd ever heard.

Leave your competition with the leftovers.

It sounds almost petty when you say it out loud, but think about what it actually means. No bigger budget. No flashier marketing. Just better people, grown on purpose, and that was the whole plan.

Most companies aren't willing to play the long game. The ones who do keep winning quietly while everyone else is still fighting over the same tools and the same technology.

New episode with Joe Fusco on The Ripple Effect Podcast is out now on YouTube and all major podcast platforms.

Politics with your uncle, religion with your best friend, that conversation about a parent's care that nobody wants to start...

We've all got one we keep putting off.

This month's Good Question gets right at that moment: How do you keep a disagreement from turning into a fight?

The answer isn't about being right or convincing anyone of anything. It's about something you say before the actual topic even comes up, one honest sentence that changes the entire tone of the conversation before it starts.

If you're subscribed to the Ripple newsletter, this month's Good Question is already sitting in your inbox. If you'd rather watch it play out with real examples and real stories, here's the video: https://youtu.be/li22PQ9PaAk
