Big thanks to Waste Advantage magazine for covering our client's certification! On April 30th, Texas Disposal Systems announced its newly minted certification as the City of Austin’s only “Qualified Processor” for construction & demolition (C&D) materials recycling.

Serving as the only city-approved, third-party “Qualified Processor Evaluator,” Zero Waste Strategies, LLC validated the waste diversion data claimed by TDS in an independent audit verifying the numbers. Through this process, we confirmed the facility’s 𝟲𝟳.𝟯𝟳% 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲, which is well above the fifty percent minimum requirement stated in the Austin C&D Debris Recycling Ordinance, which affects properties of 5,000 sq. ft. or more.

Contractors managing projects affected under this ordinance can now trust they are in compliance when they use the TDS facility to process C&D debris.

Just got back from the 3rd Annual Zero Waste Forum in Park City and I’m still feeling energized from it all! I spoke on the “Women in Circularity” panel with MaryEllen Etienne and Lisa Puckett, where we talked about the ABC’s of Zero Waste—accountability, behavior change, and compliance. Such a great discussion!

Some key takeaways:
🍎 Addressing food waste is the biggest needle-mover in the US to usher in the Circular Economy.

🧒 The youth in the Zero Waste movement are demonstrating a clear vision and action-oriented path that emboldens them to lead with conviction.

⚖️ Environmental justice is not a catch phrase. It's a dedicated playbook used by thousands of communities across the globe to demand accountability for human rights and quality of life.

There’s something special about being in a room full of people who are not just talking about change, but are actively building it. I had so many great conversations, made new connections, and was filled with fresh inspiration from people truly doing the work.

🪱 May 3-9 is ! All week long, we're celebrating how helps feed the soil that feeds us and supports healthier food systems, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future.

♻️ Compost is created by recycling organic materials like food scraps and yard waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Instead of sending these materials to landfills, which puts off , composting returns essential minerals back to the earth to improve soil health. In turn, this produces healthier foods for families.

🎤 Last week, I had the honor of speaking at a press conference celebrating Texas Disposal Systems' designation as the City of Austin’s only Qualified Processor for construction and demolition (C&D) debris.

🔰 As the City’s only approved third-party Qualified Processor Evaluator, Zero Waste Strategies, served to verify the C&D waste diversion data from TDS.

After this stringent audit process, we can confidently say:
📊 Over 67% of C&D materials are being diverted at the TDS facility!
👷♂️ C&D project contractors who use the TDS facility can trust they are in compliance with Austin's C&D recycling ordinance!

♻️ That means more materials are being reused, recycled, and put back into our local economy instead of being landfilled.

🔍 This is accountability and transparency in action and it's a big win for Austin’s goals!

✊ Today is and it is rooted in the fight for workers’ rights, fair wages, and safe working conditions. While it’s often associated with factories and industrial labor, its legacy also runs deep in the waste, recycling, and landfill industries, too.

♻️ For decades, sanitation workers, sorters, landfill operators, and recycling facility staff have done some of the most physically demanding and essential work in our communities, often without the visibility, protections, or pay they deserve.

From early union efforts to modern-day organizing, these workers have pushed for safer equipment, fair schedules, healthcare access, and dignity on the job.

Let’s be clear: without them, there is no , no , no sustainability movement. Every waste reduction and recycling milestone we celebrate is built on labor and the quality of life demands by organized unions.

💪 So today, as we talk about systems and sustainability, let’s also talk about the people behind them and continue advocating for stronger labor protections, equitable pay, and safer conditions across the waste sector.

A truly sustainable sanitation system thrives only when there is justice for the workers who keep it running.
